Half Vegan Will Travel |
|
Welcome to my totally self-involved travel journal!
To begin with, perhaps I should explain the half vegan comment. I am vegan not because of any ideological reasons, rather I have become vegan progressively as my body told me I did not need to continue eating animals and animal products to feel healthy. What this means, is that when I am in 100% control of my diet I am without exception vegan. The problem occurs with traveling that I cannot always be 100% in control of my diet.
I also do not subscribe to the idea of a single diet is effective for everyone. Just as some people feel better on a vegan diet, others need some small amount of animal protein for their bodies to operate effectively. I also don't have any issue with people that participate in subsistence hunting, as opposed to sport hunting which I think is appalling. The issue I have with eating meat is more to do with the meat industry and what it's doing to our health with all the additives they use. Plus there's the irresponsible use of land that has result from the over production of food animals whose flesh goes to waste and precious farmland is also wasted.
Finally, food is an expression of a cultural identity. The breaking of bread and sharing of food is a very moving experience and not one to be lightly dismissed if you would like to truely experience a new culture. That being said, it would take a great deal of convincing to get me to actually try eating animal flesh again, but I will be more lenient on the issue of dairy and eggs. Provided of course that my health doesn't suffer in the process.
So here's to adventure, challenges and excitement to come!!
