Oct 21, 2014 - 19 October - South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

Here we are at Croc Valley for our excursions into the South Luangwa National Park. Lovely campsite by the river with the sounds of hippos and lions and lots of birds, to say nothing of the monkeys trying to pinch things! An evening game drive on the first day, then one this morning and also this evening, and we saw so many animals - elephants, zebra, giraffes, crocodiles, hippos, impala, kudu, puku, buffalo, mongoose, genets, lots of birds and a couple of leopards. It was fantastic, so many animals everywhere you looked. It's going to be...

May 7, 2010 - Mfuwe, Zambia Game Drives

Mfuwe, Zambia, Friday, May 7, 2010 Another before dawn wake-up call, a quick breakfast and out at 6:30AM for a game drive in the Land Rover. We were a bit put out that the usual break after about two hours had not taken place. It was more like 10:30 when we were completely surprised as we rounded a bend in the road near the river to see a breakfast encampment complete with tables and chairs, a campfire, and the delicious brunch cooking. We had beans, corn fritters, bacon, sausage, eggs, toast (done over the coals), and potatoes. What a...

May 6, 2010 - Mfuwe, Zambia - Game Walk, School & Textiles

Mfuwe, Zambia, Thursday, May 6, 2010 Morning came quickly with a 5:45AM wake-up call. We headed down for a quick breakfast and at 6:30AM we were in a Land Rover headed out to the spot where we began our walking safari. This type of interaction with nature was begun over 60 years ago by Norman Carr whose daughter, Pam is our Classic Journeys guide. She learned to be a guide from her father. Peter was our guide for this walk and also Nathan, who carried a hunting rifle, was responsible for out safety. We walked in single file. Tom took his...

May 5, 2010 - Mfuwe, Zambia

Mfuwe, Zambia, Wednesday, May 5, 2010 Today we had a very mixed-up trip by air from Livingstone to Mfuwe. The flight on ProAir for which we were booked was cancelled and the airline substituted a flight to Lusaka at 9:00 followed by a flight from there to Mfuwe at 3:00 with a LONG layover on Lusaka. We decided to find a charter from Lusaka instead and booked one only to find out they only took cash! Well, we did not have that much nor could we draw it out in one day from the ATM. So we said to forget it, and they said, too bad, we already...

Aug 6, 2006 - The One Day Safari

I sure am ready for retirement. How many times do I write that in here? Not nearly as mant times as I think about it. (:)) It is time to give you a quick summary of what has taken place so far, on this foreign excursion, flying a CE-680 Citation Sovereign, a twin engine Jet, Business Aircraft, owned by a client from India. On Wednesday we waited all day for passengers to show up in London. Late in the afternoon, we finally received a call asking us to position the aircraft to Zambia, and informing us that the passengers were on their way...

Feb 12, 2006 - Parklife: South Luangwa v Serengeti

You've probably heard of Kruger, Serengeti and Masai Mara, and perhaps even Etosha and the Okavanga Delta. But South Luangwa is not a name that evokes the sort of awe associated with these other African national parks. Not unless you've been there, anyway. I'll admit that in five previous trips to southern Africa, though none through Zambia, I'd never heard of South Luangwa National Park. It was only when I was researching this honeymoon that I found the occasional gushing mention of it on the Thorn Tree (www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree)....
