Mar 12, 2010 - Our Two Days In Hong Kong
Thursday 11th March Day 61 Arriving in what can only be described as an International Container Port the size of Leeds, housing every colour & size container you could imagine, emblazoned with various names complete with all the gigantic cranes to move them around like Lego! With cargo ships to match, huge, gigantic and mega! We decided it was definitely a ‘man-thing’ I failed miserably at getting even remotely interested once I had seen them, but “all things mechanical Bill” enjoyed the organised chaos that evolved at all times of day and night. We got back to the ship and after dinner we set sail for our next port of call which is in Nha Trang in Vietnam. ... The sail away from the port was fantastic, weaving our way through the hundreds of ships in the area.Thursday 11th March Day 61 Arriving in what can only be described as an International Container Port the size of Leeds, housing every colour & size container you could imagine, emblazoned with various names complete with all the gigantic cranes to move them around like Lego! Mar 9, 2010 - Hanoi to Hoi An
We flew in to Hanoi, which made Bangkok look incredibly laid back as we were told it's a city wih a population of 6 million, with 4 million motorbikes. ... You could buy whatever you chose in Hanoi as long as you found the correct street, there were streets of shops just selling sellotape, wedding dresses and we even saw a row of shops out of town with piles of dead dogs - ready for the restaurants to chop up and cook. ... Our initial impression of Hanoi was that it was overwhelmingly busy, noisy and dirty but we soon saw its charms and grew attached. ... After a day in Hanoi we went on a trip to Halong Bay to stay overnight on a traditional junk boat. ... We met lots of interesting people to speak to and in the evening we moored up in a beautiful bay expecting a tranquil evening, but our guide had other ideas and we were bizzarely treated to a Karaoke evening with the Vietnamese locals and Japanese tourists competing for the microphone! We returned to Hanoi and went to see Tam Coc (3 caves) which was a riverside equivalent of the limestone outcrops in Halong Bay. ...

Mar 5, 2010 - Sapa to Hue (via Halong Bay) - a whistlestop tour of north Vietnam
Tuesday 2nd March Writing this on the overnight train from Hanoi to Hue – and it is a step down in cleanliness and comfort from the trains to and from Lau Cai (although it is notionally the same class). ... We are just getting ready to leave for Hoi An after a day in Hue. ... Our guide – Huey – tells us that we have done a two day itinerary in one day and is keen that we move on to Hoi An this morning, which is a bit of a pity as Hue seems really nice – more laid back than Hanoi, but still has a buzz (and also has more motorbikes than you can shake a stick at, but they are a bit less aggressive). ... We would have liked to have seen a bit more of Hue, but we have heard good things about Hoi An, so hopefully it all evens itself out. ...

Mar 5, 2010 - Sapa - with words and more photos!
We have survived the traffic madness that is Hanoi, and are now in this peaceful mountain town, very close to the Chinese border. ... Coming into land at Hanoi was amazing – there was a heavy mist, which made everything look monochrome and this added to the fact that things (the houses, the fields etc) just looked different, made it a real wow! Similarly, on the drive in from the airport we passed what seemed to be the full panoply of Vietnamese life – from rice paddies full of workers in their conical hats and ploughs drawn by bullocks, to modern looking houses. ... Hanoi seems to be a very interesting city – it is not sure whether it wants to be western or not, or whether it wants to be communist or not. ... It was rush hour, so every one of Hanoi’s 2. ... Yesterday (Friday) we did a tour of Hanoi, with Tung as our guide. ...
