Oct 6, 2008 - Dong Hoi - Life's a beach!

Took the opportunity while there wasn't a storm looming to head to the beach for a bit of a research session on Laos as I head there in a couple of days. The people have been great here in Dong Hoi and many say "hello" especially the school kids who all seem to have learned "Hello";"How are you?";"What's your name?";"Where are you from?" and "How old are you?". ... Bus journey from Ninh Binh was a bit of a mare considering I did not have a complete seatbelt and was on the top level with only a small side restraint which was much required considering that we had a driver intent on beating some record or other. Turned out we were at Dong Hoi ie. ... Turned out Dong Hoi didn't have a single pharmacy at all. ... 15 January - To Dong Hoi Checked out of the hotel and went to the bus station next door expecting to get straight on to a bus to Dong Hoi, as I got the impression buses there were pretty frequent. ... I asked where I could go, then after a while I was told I could get the bus at 2pm to Danang (some distance further south than where I wanted to go) but get off at Dong Hoi! Went back to the hotel to leave my bag until then. ... Howeer, when children ask my age it must be obvious I'm a lot older! I arrived at Dong Hoi at 5. ... They were equally surprised to see me as Dong Hoi is another place tourists tend to avoid. ... I was concerned how I would return, as the park is 55km from Dong Hoi, but with discussion it was thought I could either cadge a lift off a busof tourists or get a motorbike back. ...

We started the day with a visit to a local market, what an interesting site! We had another great day of riding, but had to finish it in the rain, it was soooo cold!
