Apr 10, 2009 - Dong Ha and Spenny's Mum's house

We were woken up at 4am and then 7am by a funeral blasting out music on two load speakers next door to the hotel. We got into Dong Ha and the river that opens up into the sea here was a major part of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. ... The area was badly bombed by the Americans and there were an awful lot of bombed out churches along the sea front that had been left as a stark reminder. We were woken up at 4am and then 7am by a funeral blasting out music on two load speakers next door to the hotel. Oct 7, 2008 - Leaving Dong Hoi For Dong Ha

Seems a very long time ago now when I got up at 4am to get the bus to Dong Ha. ... Unfortunately, one hello came from a taxi driver who was offering to take me to Dong Ha for 800K Dong. ... On reaching the bus station, I asked about the bus to Dong Ha and was told there wasn't one. ... Not a sign! In the meantime there was a change of shift so I decided to try again, this time I was met with a firm "no" to my question of "Is there a bus to Dong Ha". ... By the time we reached Dong Ha they had got to the point where people were sitting on PLASTIC seats!! There was even a table somewhere under all the bags. ...

Sometimes, just when you are at your wits end traveling and are about ready to throw a young local Vietmanese into traffic, you have an experience that makes it clear why it is all worth while.Sometimes, just when you are at your wits end traveling and are about ready to throw a young local Vietmanese into traffic, you have an experience that makes it clear why it is all worth while....

Wasn't planning on stopping here, but after spending the first hour attempting to sort out transport to Hanoi that evening, and it all being full or too expensive, I am forced to wait a day, but really glad I did.Wasn't planning on stopping here, but after spending the first hour attempting to sort out transport to Hanoi that evening, and it all being full or too expensive, I am forced to wait a day, but really glad I did....

Feb 25, 2006 - Dong Ha

We were unloaded in the centre of Dong Ha have no map, no money and no idea where we were or where we needed to go (and in badly need of a shower!!)Money was first on the agenda so we found the only bank just as the shutters were coming down (with it being sat lunch it wouldn't open till monday!!)But what a result an ATM outside which decided our nightmare should prolong!!! It didn't like international cards. ... Temper slightly fraying we trudged round the town with no westerners (as it wasn't a touristy area) very dirty, both with the "they are laughing at us feeling" After blagging our way into the Dong Ha Hilton (Price not quality) we waited out the next two days watching films and feeling sorry for ourselves (couldn't venture far from the hotel as had no money!!) Room bill 204 got a hammering!! With our only money we decided to get a bit of comfort food on sunday ready for Shrek 2!!! Only to find an ATM that took our card next to the hotel, after looking around and Jeremy Beadle not in sight the only thing we could do was laugh!!!!!!!!!!!!! On monday we went back to the bank to change our travelers cheques. ... Where guess what they didn't take them!!! More laughter!! Our love affair with Dong Ha was well and truly over!! SO we headed back to the ATM got some money out paid our ENOURMOUS bill!!! We climbed aboard the death trap mini van to Hue where the driver managed to get 21 people with luggage in a 12 seater for the 76km journey. ...

Feb 9, 2006 - The DMZ...In the Pouring Rain...On Motorbikes

Dong Ha, VietNam On the 17th Parallel Getting out of Hue couldn't happen soon enough, but even that was wrought with frustration. ... Protracted -but friendly bargaining and an immense amount of (Bozick) stubbornness finally got us a fair shake on a local taxi to Dong Ha. ... By the time we came out the rain had stopped, and we dried out with the wind through our hair (oops -I mean helmets!) on the way back to Dong Ha. ...
