Yet another early morning to catch our tour bus to the Mekong Delta to start our three day trip that will eventually take us over the Cambodian boarder. Then we got some push bikes to ride around on, it was just great- riding down these little streets watching the locals doing their daily tasks and banana plantations on both sides of the road, was picture perfect! Then back in the boat and onto Can Tho, the little town where we were to stay for the night. ... A lovely place with a lovely walking area along the Mekong, very nice!! The Mekong Delta was formed by sediment deposited by the Mekong river, a process which continues today extending the delta's shoreline by 79metres per year. We stayed in Can Tho city overnight, in the heart of the delta, having a group dinner, around 30 of us in a local restaurant chosen by our comical guide Tuan and Kevin decided to try one of the local dishes, curried snake!! It didn't really taste of much and the meat was quite stringy so we won't be having that again or any of the other dishes - rat, dog or cat! The second day started with a boat trip to the floating market at Cai Rong, the biggest within the delta. ... We met our tour bus at 7:45am in HCMC. went too quickly before we were back on the bus and heading to Can Tho. ... We did have a "pit stop" at the Bonsai Gardens where we could stretch our legs, buy refreshments and use the WC!! But it wasn't long before we had stopped - when we had to stop again!! All I have to say is Can Tho is a drastic improvement to Cau Doc. ... Actually, Can Tho turned out to be a very nice place to spend a couple of days. ... And this was 2pm on a weekday! We beat a hasty retreat out of Long Xuyen and headed to one of the Mekong Delta's largest towns, Can Tho. ... 30am departure (Holly was not happy) and we spent the next seven hours on our own boat, alternately motoring and paddling through the floating markets and then through the back canals to Can Tho. ... Once we finished at the markets, our motor came on and we cruised off up the back canals to Can Tho. ... However by doing the trip from Can Tho we beat the Saigon tourists, who arrive en masse around 8ish, and shared the market with one other set of backpackers, who were on a similar trip to us. ...
