Oct 4, 2009 - The Road to Moynaq

I woke up from my yurt nap even before my alarm emitted its hideous yelp at 6:30, but it proved most difficult to convince myself of the need to emerge from my cozy cocoon and greet the freezing morning. At about 7:00 I finally got dressed and staggered out of the yurt only to see the humungous, violet bulb of the moon cascade beneath the horizon over Ayaz Qol Lake before I could get a decent photo off. I couldn't complain - nature had dealt me and my camera a pretty good had so far. Meanwhile, the sun was agitating behind Ayaz Qala...

Jun 28, 2005 - Khiva

Another bright sunny day- yesterday was 52 degrees- and probably the breeze has cooled the temperature down to mid to late 30's. The Labi House hotel staff took us to the bus station Sunday morning to catch the bus to Khiva which didn't happen as there wasn't one! We set about negotiating a private car for $34 and off we went on what is supposedly a 10 hr bus ride. Within 90 mimutes our driver's head started nodding, so much so that eventually Brian shook him and indicated that he would drive- and so that's what happened! It was a tarsealed...
