Apr 10, 2009 - Ranch - Uruguay
We stayed for 3 nights at this working ranch in Uruguay. It has been in Juan's family at least back to his grandparents, he and his siblings, as well as his parents of course were born on the ranch. There is no electricity, they have a generator he runs for 3 hours a day. The water for washing is heated by running pipes behind the cook stove, heated by wood. There is a well outside, the only functional well I have seen in my life. We all had to try out our problem solving and motor planning for this. There is a pulley system to lift the...

We spent a short amount time in Montevideo, < day. Montervideo is the Capital of Uruguay and largest city. What surprised us about the city is how deserted the town was, as half the shops had closed. We went to the old town area and it was like the area had been evacuated. We walked down streets and saw very few people. The wealth had left the city. We did go to the main tourist area and found some nice restaurants. We had a nice platter for 2 of seafood mussels, fish, calamery, scallops etc. I guess this city although clean with friendly...

Feb 19, 2009 - Montevideo, Uruguay 8th Port
Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay and is often called the Switzerland of South America. It has an excellent standard of living, high literacy rate, low crime rate and temperate weather (although you couldn't prove it from the amount of sweating going on). Its history dates back to 1516 with the arrival of the Spanish. It is the home to many nationalities. It is a beautiful city. Its glamor dates back to the early 1900s and is similar to the grand homes of New York, Newport. As we exited the ship young women handed us a pamphlet on...

Jan 31, 2009 - Montevideo
Mel and Lynn and Bob and I took a private van from Carmelo to Montevideo where they had a flight later that night and we had an overnight bus to Brazil. (A little jealous of Steve who stayed with the rest of the group who took a hydrofoil boat across the river to fly out of Buenos Aires!) We had a nice tour guide who showed us around the Old City, Port Market, and a few neighborhoods of Montevideo. The city is ´just fine´, but there isn´t a ton to see or do and we were killing time by late afternoon while we were awaiting our transportation...

Jan 18, 2009 - Montevideo, Uruguay
Our first big city since Santiago. Montevideo is the capitol of Uruguay and like most cities has an old and new part of the city. There are only 3 million people in all of Uruguay and 1.5 million live in the capitol. We hired a taxi driver named Jaime who drove us around to show us the sights. We saw the Parliament building first, went inside and saw the 56 different kinds of marble it was built with. Also, saw paintings dipicting the battles for liberation of Uruguay in the 1800´s. We then went to some beautiful parks with fountains and...

Dec 27, 2008 - Montevideo, Uruguay
Ravi -- Well, Montevideo was far from our favorite big city in Latin America. We only allocated one day here, on the way from romantic Colonia to the beaches further east. That was more than enough! Unbeknownst to us, Saturday is apparently a bad day to visit, and the downtown is completely deserted, museums and restaurants mostly closed. We finally found some life at the Port Market complex, an atmospheric busy indoor market with restaurants and street performers outside. But beyond this city-block-sized area, not much else to offer...

Aug 14, 2008 - Montevideo
We got the bus from Colonia to Uruguay´s capital, Montevideo. The countryside here is all flat and full of grassy fields which are ideal for growing the steaks! Victoria had the cold for most of the 4 days we spent here so we didn´t do as much as we had planned. However, we still managed to see a bit of the city and consume several more steaks! Montevideo didn´t really strike us as a capital city, albeit of a relatively small country. In saying this, we rather liked it. It is quite a laid back place which is easy to wander around and there...

Jul 20, 2008 - Rosslyn Park defeats Uruguay
Uruguay Federation 0pts Rosslyn Park 10pts This game was severely delayed by a poorly-planned travel schedule that saw Park up at 5.30 a.m., take the ferry across the vast expanse of the River Plata for an hour, not met by a guide, then a two hour coach journey to Montevideo without a decent meal until our arrival and then a dash to the ground which left little time for preparation and even less time to complete the game in fading light. Despite all the possible ramifications of the journey, Park played a blistering game that saw the...
