Our last stop on the Oregon Trail was the most important geographical location for America's Manifest Destiny westward migration, South Pass. South Pass is a 20 mile wide gap through the Rocky Mountains. It is the only pass along the entire Continental Divide that allowed for an easy crossing with heavily loaded wagons. Many pioneers mentioned in their journal that they didn't even realise that they crossed the continental divide until someone pointed it out to them. May 6, 2008 - South Pass City ghost town

Many miles of driving now...Dubois to Lander, through the Wind River foothills to South Pass City. It was a great time to be in the Wind River foothills because there was the brown earth and lots of snow patches ...kind of like a surrealist brown and white painting...very cool. South Pass City was once a gold rush town and is now a restored ghost town. There are about 35 buildings still there. The road out there is a dirt and gravel roller coaster...you know, the kind of up and down road where you can't see the downside until you get to...
