I think I neglected to tell you yesterday that I found the most marvelous chocolate shop - in a tiny town called Meeteetse. It's south of Thermopolis. I bought myself two chocolates: a dark chocolate and jalepino truffle and a fig dipped in dark chocolate. Both were indescribably delicious. I bought Paul a bag of Peruvian chocolates - just simple rounds of milk chocolate, but so rich in chocolateness and so smooth! The story is that the chocolatier got his start when he needed to raise money to replace a broken saddle. He was a bronc rider,...

To Alaska and Back

Jun 11, 2012 - Saratoga, WY

As you could see we had an amazing drive today. From leaving the wildfires behind to experiencing the Medicine Bow National Forest and the Snowy Range, it was just why we are taking this trip. The only thing missing was animals (besides ours that is). Can you believe at the top of the mountains at 10,800 feet we could still see the smoke from Fort Collins? Today's trip took us north on 287 to Laramie then Rt. 130 to Saratoga. If you get a chance to do this drive it is as good as the Cimmaron Park drive in NM only different. Tomorrow we are...

Sep 7, 2011 - Saratoga, WY

We decided to stop in Saratoga to go to the Hobo Hot Springs, which are free and open 24/7. Some of the pools were too, too hot. It was a rainy, cloudy two days, but the mountains and scenery were beautiful. We did a short hike on the Encampment River Trail (too much rain), visited the local historical museum and found the local coffee shop, Lolipops, which happened to have homemade ice cream.

Aug 11, 2011 - Climbing into the Rockies, again

Sorry to be so late in posting this...we were without Internet access until this evening. Yesterday we woke up in the Walmart parking lot and went to see The Ivinson Mansion in Laramie. It was built in 1892 and has the largest collection of hand-carved furniture made in Wyoming. Several of the pieces were made by inmates from the Wyoming Territorial Prison we had visited yesterday. The house was the best we've seen so far, very spacious. Mr. Ivinson became Laramie's first banker because he was the only resident with a safe! The attic housed...

Allan just loves the new camera! Hello from Saratoga Again! Wyoming does not like ours & other’s cell phone providers. No calls in today but I was able to make 2 out. This is definitely G-d’s country. Blue blue skys, & we have been lucky to catch perfect temps. They do however, have intermittent very high winds. We are here per recommendation of Irv K. So we headed out this morning for Medicine Bow National Forest & up into the mountains thru Snowy Range Pass. Quite a spectacular sight & lots of snow. Temps in the mid 50’s & clear skies....

Couldn’t get connected last night (Friday) to post this…. Brenda wanted me to be sure to mention that in yesterday’s photos, in the pix of the hill with the suspended road above…. The motor home drove over that road both coming & going. We didn’t know what it was till we drove down below & saw it! Yipes! It is the road just after crossing the dam. Pix will not necessarily be posted on the day they were taken. Also, I can’t send separate emails to different people so the post will have info not relevant to some of you. Can’t get any of my...

Jun 17, 2008 - On to the Grand Tetons!

Didn't have sufficient cell service to upload photos. Stay tuned for photos. Lets see....last time I blogged, we had landed in Loveland, CO, and done the Ridge Trail Road, right? Well, we drove from Loveland to Saratoga, Wyoming to soak in the Saratoga Hot Springs! Can you believe it? Saratoga was about 200 miles from Loveland, so it made a nice half day drive, and we arrived there midday Sunday, July 15. We had a space right on the North Platte River, which was roaring with spring runoff. The rafters and fishermen were floating VERY fast...

Oct 9, 2007 - A Canyon and More Hot Springs

After an early visit to downtown Thermopolis, I was especially anticipating the drive this morning through the Wind River Canyon, and it did not disappoint. What a spectacular landscape! Most of the rest of the drive was through Wyoming desert - very stark. South of Riverton near Sand Draw was another dramatic landscape - a high mesa, snow caped mountains in the distance and unusual rock formations. I briefly retraced a portion of my route from two years ago, a section of the Oregon Trail. For the third night in a row, I spent the night at...
