The pioneer history is pretty impressive....this rock was named because the pioneers had to be here by July 4th, (Independence Day) in order to be sure they could cross the Rockies before winter. If they didn't get here by then, they would have to return to Nebraska to winter, or face starvation and death in the mountains. Many tested the limits, and thousands died.....
