Jul 16, 2019 - Yellowstone from the South

So we're camped in at Headwaters Campground at Flagg Ranch off the John D Rockefeller Jr Memorial Parkway between Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone. Nice FHU site with shade, firepit and picnic table, but no cell service, satellite or WIFI. Took the opportunity to offload the Harley and do some riding in the southern part of Yellowstone. Went around the west side of Yellowstone Lake, but turned around near Fishing Bridge due to construction. We'll be here 3 nights and then head up into the South Gate and out the East Gate of...

Aug 29, 2017 - Scenic Drive

We finally got to take a scenic drive. The Tetons are visible through our back window but are hazy because of smoke in the air. This day we got up close and personal. We also saw a presentation by the Raptor Center about owls and eagles. It was a wonderful day.

Aug 26, 2017 - Moran, WY

Today we drove through Fishing Bridge and around Lake Yellowstone on our way to visit the Jackson Hole area. Things have changed in the fifty years since I first was there. People can no longer fish off the Fishing Bridge like I did. Also, the fire in 1988 that consumed 1/3 of the park has left many areas scarred. New trees are growing but many tall burned trees remain. However, the park is still very beautiful.

May 31, 2017 - Yellowstone day 2 to Colter Bay Campground, Moran, WY

We left our campsite about 7:40 am. It was 37 degrees. We headed from Norris toward Mammoth Hot Springs, and hit a little construction along the way, but it didn't slow us down much. There was a buffalo walking beside the road in the road work area. In one place, the road went over a via duct built alongside a mountain. It reminded us of the Blue Ridge Parkway. We stopped at the Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces, and climbed the many ramps and stairs to the top. It was so beautiful, with an array of different colors, steam coming from numerous...

May 17, 2014 - Teton tour day

Touring day today. We left at 8am. It was 38 outside and heavy overcast. We learned that the Buffalo and Bison are the same animal although the proper name is American Bison (Bison bison). There are actually 4 types of Bison in the world. The American bison only lives in North America and has a distinctive hump. There is a European Bison which only lives in isolated parts of Poland. The African cape buffalo are found in the South and Eastern parts of Africa and the Asian water buffalo is a water buffalo. So we saw two groups of Bison...

Aug 26, 2013 - Moran, Wyoming and Grand Teton National Park

When we were trying to determine where to go from Gardiner on August 19th, I called the Grand Teton RV Resort in Moran to inquire about a reservation. I asked about smoke in the area and explained why (Brian’s asthma), the woman who answered my call (a nurse) said there was a lot of smoke from a fire near Dubois, a town about 56 miles east of Moran. She recommended against stopping there. As we were getting ready to leave West Yellowstone August 22nd, I called the Grand Teton Resort and the same woman answered. She said they had gotten...

/// Sleeping Bear Campground Lander, WY // Thursday – August 23, 2012 Low Temperature: 62 degrees High Temperature: 90 degrees // Day Trip: Dubois, WY; National Bighorn Sheep Center; Grand Teton NP By 9:00 AM we were headed up the Wind River Range to the western town of Dubois, nestled in the foothills of the mountains. Dubois is rich in western history and is known for its excellent hunting and fishing. I especially enjoy seeing the use of logs in local architecture. The nearby Whiskey Mountains is the wintering home of the largest herd of...

Aug 6, 2012 - Hiking the Tetons

We woke to a chilly, drizzly morning. After a summer of no rain, it seemed a bit unfair, that the first day with our friends and grand kids it was raining, but we didn't let that deter us. We headed out towards Jenny Lake, with hopes of clearing skies, which were granted. We took a boat ride across this amazing glacier lake, which also saved us about 4 miles of hiking. The boat left us at the base of the Teton Mountain range and we hiked the mile trial up to Inspiration Point. Along the hike we saw stunning waterfalls, streams, and a...

Aug 5, 2012 - Back to Wyoming!

We were all up early and ready, when the driver arrived at 5:45 to take us to Logan for our flight back to Wyoming. Joshua and Karissa settled in for the first leg of our trip to Chicago. We were a little late do to bad weather around Detroit, but that just shorten our layover in Chicago, where the kids gained their first hour of extra vacation time. The next flight was just as uneventful, until we started to descend into Jackson Hole and those magnificent Tetons were as high up as our plane. We landed, added another hour to the kids...

Aug 4, 2012 - Amanda & Keith's Wedding

Wow, nothing like a weather adjustment, from the cool Teton Mountains to the hot, MUGGY town of Weare. How quickly one forgets the mugginess of the east. We couldn't seem to stop being sticky all day. Since there wasn't a speck of food in the house, George headed out to get something for breakfast and lunch, while Lisa went through stacks and stacks of mail. Jeez, we sure get a lot of junk mail!! The Amato's arrived around 1:30, with the grand kids all packed-up for their trip out west. Now, we hadn't seen rain all summer, so when a gentle...

Aug 3, 2012 - Heading Home

Another cold morning in the Tetons. The furnace is getting a workout! After a casual morning in Colter Bay and yes we were able to see the Tetons today, we headed towards Jackson Hole Airport for our 1:00 flight to Denver. It was a little unsettling leaving our dog, camper and truck in Wyoming, while we flew back to New Hampshire. Our connection through Denver was uneventful. We discussed the possibility of putting the Colorado state sticker on our map. After all we spent two hours in the state, but after some discussion we decided it...

Aug 2, 2012 - The Wildness of Jackson, WY

Wow, it was a cold morning in the Tetons. The fireplace would not warm up the camper so the furnace needed to be turned on, luckily the day warmed up quickly and got into the low 70s, which was a nice relief after so many hot days this summer. Today was laundry day and clean the camper day, ugh! You wouldn't think we'd have to do such mundane jobs while on vacation! We had a little bit of a culture shock as we packed up our laundry and headed to the Colter Bay laundromat, easier to do 4 loads at a time, versus one at a time in the camper....
