Summer 2019

Oct 1, 2018 - Laramie WY to Brigham City Ut

The drive from Estes Park to Laramie was longer than I expected. Lots of Sunday traffic. I woke this morning with full intentions of driving most of the 140 mile scenic drive of Flaming Gorge until several people at the hotel made it clear that after Labor Day the place is pretty deserted with no services. Only one of the three people thought the drive was worth the time and gas. Scratch that off the list! Plan B - head straight to Brigham City, Utah and explore. It was a beautiful sunny 78 degree day and yet I made terrible time mostly...

Jul 7, 2018 - Wyoming Territorial Prison and U of W Geological Museum

We had some time today to hang around Laramie and check out some of the things to do here. The Wyoming Territorial Prison seemed like a pretty good place to see. The prison at one time was a federal penitentiary from 1872 to 1890. In 1890, Wyoming was admitted to the Union as a state and ownership transferred to Wyoming. The state operated the prison until 1901. In 1904 the property was transferred to the University of Wyoming and was used as an agricultural experiment station until 1989. It was opened to the public in 1991 and was...

Jul 5, 2018 - Laramie, Wyoming

We made it to Laramie, Wyoming today. I am glad it was a short trip (106 miles from Rawlins) because the wind was terrible today. I think we had 20 mph headwinds with gusts up to 30 today. We made reservation here because there is no place available within our budget between here and Pueblo, Colorado. We decided to stay here three nights. We need to stock up on some groceries and do the laundry. I think I will try to find a place to get a haircut while we are here. Paula wants to take a drive tomorrow. We will see if we can find something...

Sep 23, 2017 - North Platte to Laramie, WY

We stopped at the Cabela Headquarters in Sidney, NE for a while and then continued on to Laramie, WY. Last night in North Platte we had a thunderstorm and a lot of rain. Today after Cheyenne the clouds closed in and visibility was only about one mile. As we neared Laramie it was foggy and they actually slowed the speed limit on the freeway. It is supposed to get down to 33 degrees here tonight. What a change from yesterday! We plan to make Salt Lake City tomorrow.

Sep 5, 2017 - Laramie WY

The weather has turned cooler. Hooray! We were 4th in line at the dump station then we got on I-80 and headed to Laramie for an overnight. Sights on the way: Statue of the Virgin Mary - a 40 ft tall statue on a 10 ft pedestal. It is called Our Lady of Peace Shrine seen by Interstate 80 travelers on the north side of the interstate in Pine Bluffs, Wyoming. It is the dream of a Wyoming couple, Ted and Marjorie Trefren of Cheyenne, Wyoming. They talked about erecting a Marian Shrine in Wyoming. For several years, the couple sought a site...

The Volunteer Life

Sep 1, 2016 - Family Time

The last few days have been family time: with Barbara's daughter, Leslie, and son-in-law Mark. And of course, Roxie, their beautiful, black lab and rottweiler mix, who loves everyone. Everyone loves her too as long as they can dodge her tail, which is a lethal weapon. Both Les and Mark like gardening, but the growing season here is so short it is a challenge. See the photos for some of the things they're doing to compensate. Now if there were just some way to compensate for Arkansas's bugs.... We have had lots of fun talking and playing...

Jun 3, 2016 - Map Update 1

I know I have not done this in a long time, so I am starting with just updating the map. No real sense in reading them until we get to Arcata, as I am just trying to make the map correct. To be honest, I started this journal to keep my parents up to date on where we were and what we were doing. Now that they are both gone I have kind of lost interest, but decided I would try and update and see where it goes from here. I am also going to edit the location to remove South Africa as it throws off all our travels. So until the title says...
