Oct 4, 2016 - TURN RIGHT!

OK. So here are a couple of photos of Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and another place we visited back in Wyoming – Devil’s Tower. When we left our motel in Custer we were a bit worried that the weather still hadn’t cleared up enough. We were driving towards clouds. But, amazingly, they cleared when we were at Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse. It then rained pretty much most of the way as we headed back into Wyoming. A bit out of the way, but since we were kinda nearby, we went to Devil’s Tower. Again, it rained all the way there, but was...

Sep 8, 2016 - Day 3

We woke up at a decent time and headed out from good ol' Wall. We had to backtrack about 20 minutes to hit the preferred entrance to the Badlands National Park. It was a very pretty ride! We stopped more than we thought we would, including a little half hour hike into the middle of the Badlands, which Peighton absolutely LOVED. Apparently, she's going to be our little hiking girl. K was a bit scared the whole time, so she had to ride on my shoulders. (Queue cute video on FB, too large to upload here). After leaving the Badlands, we hit Mt...

Landheer Trip 2016!

Jun 1, 2016 - Gillette, Wyoming

There is little to report today. We are rested after yesterday’s fishing trip. I have a long talk with our campground host in Casper. They are already booked for next August. There will be a full solar eclipse in August of 2017. I do not think I can plan that far in advance. Besides, what if it is a cloudy day? We make another two hour move from Casper to Gillette. The roads are good. The weather is good. We are on our way to the Black Hills. We pass the Teapot Dome. I think I read that parts have fallen. I don’t see a teapot. Two years...

Jul 11, 2015 - Road Warriors

We are on our way to South Dakota. Rosina started the day driving thru Yellowstone National Park heading towards Wyoming. Traffic was backed up because a bison was walking down the middle of the road. Rosina pulled up next to him so Kathy could get a picture. The roads were narrow and winding thru the mountains. Vinny was white knuckling the ride. We drove into Cody and stopped for lunch. After lunch Art took over driving. Art's roads were paved in gold. We had a nice ride toward Buffalo Wyoming. Two and a half hours later Vinny jumped into...

Rolling Vacation

Oct 4, 2014 - Gillette, WY - The Migration Continues

(Ron Writing) Yesterday it was very cold when we got up, only about 35°, but at least it was above freezing. We slept a little late, had a leisurely breakfast, and intended to continue on our way south but the wind was still very strong and today it was mostly out of the south/southwest. We decided to drive just a short distance south to Spearfish, SD and spend a relaxing day there. It was cold again last night but it seems the cold front has mostly moved out of this area and warmer temperatures are forecast. It was still very windy out of...

Sep 8, 2014 - Day 16

108 miles, 15.08 average speed, 32.25 max and and 3963 feet climbing. Today we rode into Gillette, Wyoming which is the largest coal producer in the nation. That explains the giant pit on the edge of town as we rode in. It also explains the sirens I was hearing and then the big explosion and dirt flying into the sky. Cool. I made a comment this morning that we had n15thot seen many animals yet and after that we saw hundreds of Pronghorn deer, whitetail deer and quite a few turkeys. We did come across a highway construction zone about 4...

May 27, 2014 - Gillette, WY

It is a wonderful day in Gillette, “The Energy Capital of the Nation“. Our biorhythms are back in sync. We take the motorcycle to breakfast. We take the RV to the local Doge Dealership. They are backed up for a week. There is no computer code. They recommend a Transmission Shop. Like the dealership, it is within blocks of the campground. The shop owner takes us right in and runs diagnostics. The good news is that it is not a transmission problem. The owner of the Transmission Shop sends us to an Exhaust Shop. He starts to give directions....

May 26, 2014 - Gillette, WY

Things always seem brighter after a good night’s sleep. We are in a good campground. The showers, WIFI, laundry, price and location are great. The people are friendly. Everyone in Gillette has been friendly. It is a city but it has a small town feel. I like it. Our campground neighbor points us in the direction of a good restaurant. The restaurant is only a couple of blocks away. Again, we wait a long time for our breakfast but the place is packed. This time the breakfast is worth the wait! We take our motorcycle to the car wash. It is...

May 25, 2014 - Gillette, WY

Not all days work out well. It is part of traveling. We decide to travel to Casper even though it is a holiday weekend. We have stayed at Casper before and do not expect the campground to be full. I check the map and have the not so brilliant idea of eating breakfast at Cheyenne Crossing. The breakfast is okay. The wait is awful. We almost leave. We have cereal in the RV! We turn onto 85 south. We start to climb again. Our campground host told us about O’Neill Pass. Take it slow and you will be fine. He is right. Our host also told us that...

Apr 21, 2014 - April 20 - Day 17

It's Easter and I had my first cup of coffee in 40 days! I survived Lent and so did Chooie!! We were up and out early to church and breakfast. We got on the road by 10:30 for our trek to WY. It really didn't feel like Easter, just a long day of travel. We saw a lot of Montana - mountains, grasslands and highway. The interesting thing we noted is that every town we passed (not that many!) all had a Harley-Davidson store. Interesting because we really haven't seen many bikes on the road. It may be too cold for them yet... We did pass a sign...
