Sep 8, 2019 - Vacation - Day 3 Dinosaur Tracks to Cody

Date: September 8, 2019 Weather: sunny/some clouds, shower in evening Temperature: start 41º High 53º Wildlife count: Red Squirrel, Pronghorn, Chipmunk Year List: 321 Birds: Interesting breakfast this morning! Some of the eggs were frozen in their shell. So, I was able to break them open and attempt to stir and break them into pieces, and when in the pan with the bacon, one would never know that they had been frozen – the scrambled eggs were very good! Of course, anything is good with bacon!!! The sun was shining, so everything looked...

Aug 16, 2019 - Bighorn Basin

About the Bighorn Basin: This heart-shaped basin at 4000-6000 feet above sea level in northwestern Wyoming has the volcanically-formed Absaroka Mountains on its western edge, the ancient basement rock of the Beartooth, Bighorn and Owl Creek and Bridger Mountains to its northwest, east and south (respectively) and the Pryor Mountains forming a natural dam to the north. - The basin covers an area larger than Connecticut and Delaware combined. - When dinosaurs roamed, 160-180 million years ago, the land in the basin was located much...

Jul 25, 2019 - 9th STOP - Cody, WY

7/25/19 - Cody, WY I forgot to mention that when we drove into the Deer Park RV a fox ran right in front of the RV. It was grey/white which I have never seen before. What a ride here from Buffalo, WY. We went US 16 up into the mountains and down on 7% grades, 180 switchbacks and beautiful scenery. Kay took a few pics of the road here and then decided it was not interesting any more. (I will post them tomorrow - too tired tonight) We went through Ten Sleep, WY, a town of 240 persons, a neat little town with gift shops, etc. Then through...

Jul 19, 2019 - Cody Trout Ranch and RV Park

We had 5 days in Cody, and could have probably done a couple more. We went to the Buffalo Bill Cody Musical Show, which was pretty good but sometimes looked like a high school musical. The day we rode Beartooth Pass was definitely the highlight on the stay. It was absolutely beautiful, weather was gorgeous and we got to see some more wild life along the way. We stopped briefly at the Top Of The World Store, but couldn't stand the mosquitoes and headed back out quickly. We stopped in Red Lodge where they had just had a pretty big Bike Rally...

Summer 2019

Jun 9, 2019 - Cody WY

Tuesday’s drive was a less-than-grueling 1 hour trek west on U.S. 14/16/20...yep, it’s all those roads...and we pulled into the Cody Trout Ranch RV Park about 11:30, but they were very accommodating and allowed us to set up before their normal check in time. We headed out and found Michael’s Tacos for some quite tasty – you guessed it, tacos – and luckily it was Taco Tuesday! From there we were off to Walmart – yuk – to restock. Wednesday was a bit more fun-filled as we started the day with a moderately interesting hour long trolley tour...

Jul 1, 2018 - Cody WY

Tuesday was – get this – a Yellowstone day! And then some. Surprised? Naw, you can’t be. We rolled out of the house about 9:30 and headed to Granny’s Restaurant for a quick breakfast, then headed up Highway 120 to Belfry, Montana where we hung a left to Red Lodge, then onto U.S. 212, one of the most awesome roads in the country, the 68 mile long Beartooth Highway http://beartoothhighway.com/. If you remember all the way back to the June 18th update, you’ll recall that we did the highest continually paved road, Trail Ridge Road in Rocky...

Jun 25, 2018 - Cody WY

So, Friday morning we got our act together and just after noon we pointed the house north on U.S. 191 then northeast toward Lander, Riverton, through the always awesome Wind River Canyon, Thermopolis and then Meeteetsee till we pulled into our campground on the outskirts of Cody just about 5:15. We ate dinner then met up with my parents at their hotel in Cody, did the computer and camera service call, then pulled the plug on our day and were home by 10:00ish. Since my brother and sister-in-law live about an hour north in Billings and...

Jun 16, 2018 - Cody, Wyoming

It rained last night. It is raining this morning. No problem. We head to town in the RV. We have a delicious breakfast at Irma’s Hotel. Bill Cody founded Cody. He built the hotel and named it after his youngest daughter. You can’t leave Cody without eating at least one meal here. After breakfast, we walk a block on the main highway. John has seen the sign for the Harley Davidson store. It is time to climb aboard the Cody Trolley. We take a one hour tour of the city. It is entertaining. We learn a bit. It takes us around town. It takes us...

Jun 13, 2018 - Cody, Wyoming

We start our morning talking to our Montana neighbors at the campground. They ask about our travels and we ask about Montana. We get on the road. There is a shortcut to Route 72. We have been told that it is a good two lane highway. We start with some climbing, followed by some downhill and then stop at a scenic overlook. WOW. The stop is great and so is the rest of the fifteen mile shortcut. It would have been a shame to miss this. We head south. It is an easy run to Cody. We stock up at Abertson’s. We check in early at the campground....

Jun 6, 2018 - Ranchester WY to Cody via Bignhorn Mountain Range

Another day on the trail. We left Ranchester for what we thought would be an uneventful drive to Cody. According to the GPS, it would be about three hours. Little did we know what we were going to find. Route 14 is the most direct route. As we came upon a huge mountain range we were both surprised. ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL SET OF TWISTS AND TURNS. I must have missed the day in school that we learned about the Bighorn Mountain Range. It is a range about 80 miles east of the Rocky Mountains that is unbelievable and certainly underestimated, as you...

May 29, 2018 - The Wild Wild West

We are in the Wild Wild West in Cody Wyoming staying at the Absaroka RV Park. Yesterday we went on a tour of the Old Town West. It was like an old west town back in the day. There was a school, saloon, livery stables just to name a few. It was laid out by Bill Cody. Attached are some pics of the town and relocated gravesites of some gunslingers. Today we went to the Buffalo Bill museum and spent most of the afternoon. Buffalo Bill is revered here for sure. The weather is overcast, rainy and chilly. Still using fireplace in the morning but...

May 27, 2018 - Jackson Wyoming and Leaving Colter Bay

Yesterday, Saturday, we mosied over to Jackson, WY to check out the Old West Days. We were delayed on the road to Jackson to allow a mama bear and her 2 cubs to cross the road. There were so many onlookers with their fancy expensive cameras, I could not get a good view or picture!!! That area had been on bear alert the entire time we were there. We continued to Jackson. We had the pleasure of meeting up with new found friends, Joe and Margaret, from Houston who come to Jackson to volunteer at the Visitors Center for the summer. Who better...
