We drove across the Great divide basin toward Lander but cut down to the dirt road leading to the old mining town of Atlantic City. There's an old mercantile and bar where we stopped for a beer. The store is from the 1890s and has a long bar reportedly imported from Ireland. We drove down the Fort Stambagh Rd and found a campsite overlooking the south pass area. There's a mining ghost town called Miners Delight or Hamilton about 3 miles from our site so we took the atv to explore. Very cool old buildings that the BLM has rehabilitated,...

Jul 22, 2008 - Shoshone NF, WY - BLM Campground Near Atlantic City, WY

(Ron Writing) We left Lander this morning after filling the gas tanks ($4.039/gal), dumping and filling Da Honu’s tanks, and getting some groceries. We headed south on US-287 a few miles and then south on WY-28 up into the Wind River Mountains. We drove through the scenic Red Canyon which is designated as a “National Natural Landmark”. We didn’t even know there was such a thing. This designation was made by the federal government “because the canyon is an outstanding example of geologic and ecologic features”.
