Jun 7, 2014 - Superior, WI - The Drive to Northern WI

(Ron Writing) After a relaxing morning we left Tomah, WI yesterday and continued north on US-12. This highway runs parallel to I-94 but is much more enjoyable than driving on an interstate. It has a speed limit of 55 mph and runs right through several small towns and through rolling hills past many farms. The interstate has a speed limit of 65 mph, which is faster than I like to drive the rig, and has a lot of truck traffic constantly zooming past us. Also, US-12 is nice smooth asphalt with very little traffic. Along the way we stopped by a...

Sep 14, 2013 - It's official!

Superior, WI The week of fishing is over. The time flew by and we enjoyed great weather all week. The fishing was great and the company enjoyable. It was time to say goodbye to the lake and head out on our leaf peeper ramble. One of the couples, Jerry and Eileen Klindt left Friday. The other 4 of us left this morning. Jim's brother Ron and wife Mary headed off to Waukee, Iowa. We headed east to Superior, Wisconsin. The drive was through pretty country but was uneventful. We arrived at the motel in time for Jim to watch the Nebraska/UCLA...

Jun 19, 2013 - Superior, Wisconsin

This morning I load up my car and head off towards the west (go west young man go west)through the upper part of Michigan and into Wisconsin. A trip to the northern tip of Wisconsin and to explore a little of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. But to really see this area it has to be done by boat which I didn't do. I did check out the Hokenson Brothers Fishery started in 1927 it became on of the largest fishery in the area. With this day ending in Superior, Wisconsin one of the twin cities the other Duluth, Minnesota both port cities...

Aug 28, 2011 - Moving East

We continued our push eastward today leaving Bemidji around 9 AM. I want to say it was an uneventful ride across US Route 2, and in the sense that nothing really bad happened, it was. However, there were two things we experienced today that we would call “eventful”. The first was the parade. Everybody loves a parade and we just happened upon this one in Floodwood. We stopped at the rest area in town for a break and to have lunch. While making our sandwiches, I looked out the window and just saw the color guard going by. Holy cow! We had a...

Scratchin' the Itch

Aug 16, 2011 - Onward to Superior

Monday we leisurely went about our business preparing to say good-by to Spooner. First up was a trip to the Chieftain Rice Company. They are a supplier of restaurants around the country with a variety of wild rice blends that we love, and they sell to the public. With our supply of the rice in hand it was across the road to Economart for a few items. We think this Spooner store has about the best hamburger around, ground ribeye. Then it was hitch-up time, and by 10:40 we were on our way to Superior, Wisconsin and Northland Camping and RV...

Sullivan's Travels

Jul 31, 2011 - Superior, WI

There must be something in the air up here, because senior moments are occurring more and more frequently. Dan said a few minutes ago, "I thought you said you changed all the clocks when we entered into the Central Time Zone." Well, I did. When we arrived here yesterday, after we got the power plugged in, I changed the time on the microwave, the new coffee maker, and the alarm clock in the bedroom. Keep in mind that when we first plug in, all the clocks will flash because we have been without power momentarily while we hook up. This morning...

2011 Northwest Trip

Jul 30, 2011 - Superior, WI

Today has been a day of senior moments. This morning started out on a bad note when I broke the coffee pot. I got the coffee all ready to brew last night, and a few minutes after I turned it on this morning I heard the sound of cracking glass. It helps when you put water in the reservoir!!! So I was the first customer in the local Pamida store (like a mini Walmart) at 9:00am this morning, to buy a new coffee pot. The next senior moment was when Dan had both of us looking all over the motor home and the car for his iPod. We were all ready...

2011 Northwest Trip

Jun 27, 2011 - Superior, WI

I could say that we had had enough of North Dakota rains that we up & bailed-out today, but that wouldn't really be the truth. Yes, in ten days that we were there, we had enough of the ND rains that we were ready to leave, but today was our scheduled date to leave, regardless of the weather. Today we scooted the last 25 miles out of ND, then all the way across Minnesota & then about a good brick-throw into Wisconsin. And what did we deal with most of the day as we traveled????.......rain, rain, rain!!!! We are now sitting with Uncle Wally...

We're Wingin' It

Sep 21, 2010 - Superior, WI - Bill's Diesel Repair, Inc.

We had just filled up with diesel at the FDL gas station in Cloquet, MN when the power steering went out on the Dutchstar. In a couple of days we could have been in Rugby, ND to finally meet up with the other Polar Bear Caravaners. Instead, we had to be towed back to Superior, WI where the Dutchstar has been sitting since that fateful day in September. We have been patiently waiting for a hydraulic pump from Spartan Chassis. It is November 2nd and we are hopeful that our mechanic will have the pump by the end of the week.

Jul 14, 2010 - Quick Stop in Wisconsin

We will return to Wisconsin, but coming across the top of the state was the quickest route to Minnesota. By stopping here in Superior, we were able to see the western end of Lake Superior. We have been from the eastern most point of Lake Ontario to the far west of Lake Superior. Sometime we will have to go to the Maritime Provinces of Canada to see the mouth of the Saint Lawrence River. Once we visit there, we will have been the entire length of the Saint Lawrence Seaway. Since Superior is just across the river from Duluth, we had planned...

Jul 9, 2010 - Summer in Duluth

Summer in Duluth was beautiful - warm, clear and sunny. But we have heard it only lasts for 1-2 days and we were lucky enough to be there then. We stayed across the river in Superior, WI and then backtracked to see the city. While there was alot of highway construction going on and it was not real easy to get around, the area near the ship canal was very active and very interesting. There is a great maritime museum which talks about the history of Duluth and Superior vying for the main shipping routes to the area, the numerous shipwrecks on...

Oct 15, 2009 - Drove Until Dark

After stops in Rhinelander, Eagle River, Woodruff, and Ironwood we got to Bad River Casino right around dusk. After realizing that we had absolutely NO cell reception and no internet reception, we decided to continue on to Superior in the dark. After checking the truckstop page we grabbed the first Holiday station on Hwys 2 & 53 and called it a night.
