Jul 28, 2015 - Manitowoc to Sheboygan ~ 24.5 mi

Ride Time ~ 2:11:29 Average ~ 11.2 mph We left Bill & Candy's house around 9:45am. We stopped at a BP Station to pick up Gatorade each. Our ride south to Sheboygan along LS had fairly nice roads and little traffic. The winds now shifted to a SSE direction and unfortunately grew as we headed into them. We started with about a 6mph headwind. Along the way, we stopped in Newton at Ann's uncle and aunt, Tony and Deannna. They were not around so we left them a little note. We then rode over to the Fruzyna homestead where Ann's mother grew up. We...

Jul 22, 2013 - Sheboygan, Wisconsin

We got back on the road fairly early and continued to head east to Green Bay, WI where we would turn south to our stop, Sheboygan, Wisconsin. From Shawano to Green Bay was very rural with lots of farms. In the area around Shawano we found many red barns with a "barn quilt" on the side. The barn quilt looks like a large picture from a quilt but are painted on the side of the barn. The pictures are just beautiful and seem individual to what the family wants it to portray. Some looked patriotic, while others had homes or horses on them. They...

Jun 5, 2012 - Monday 4th June - Queen's Birthday in NZ

We’d decided to stay an extra day in Sheboygan to have a look around the area. We breakfasted at the hotel as usual, then went to Z Spot café to get our flat white fix. Travis very kindly gave us a Z Spot t-shirt – that was very kind of him. We decided to head north along the peninsula along Lake Michigan and see where we ended up. We saw an unusual looking power plant a bit north of Sheboygan. I had a feeling it may have been a nuclear plant. We kept going north and at lunchtime we were at a lovely little town on the lakefront called...

Jun 3, 2012 - 3 June 2012 - Day 3 at Road America

We had our usual breakfast at the hotel, this morning with one of the race teams in attendance (Larry Pegram, BMW S1000RR). I’d gotten muddled up with the time delay between here and NZ, and hadn’t set MySky at home for the Catalunya MotoGP (I’ve since looked at the results for all three races) but one of the race team members had the early stages of the race showing on his laptop during breakfast – which was kind of really cool! It was a really lovely day, lots of blue sky and about 24 degrees. It would make for a big crowd of spectators...

Jun 2, 2012 - Saturday 2nd June - Day Two at Road America

Saturday 2nd June over here in the USA seems a long way away from Queen’s Birthday Weekend back in New Zealand! We breakfasted at the hotel, once again the Speed TV guys were there and we passed the time of day. After breakfast we went to see our new-found friends Jeff and Travis at the Z Spot café, and had our flat whites – bliss!! Out to the track, arrived there before the VIP suites opened at 9.00am so we went for a wander in the pits. I’d done a reasonable job of videoing the crash of the M4 rider yesterday. It was Robertino Pietri, who...

Jun 1, 2012 - Friday 1st June - Road America Day 1

A leisurely start to the day today. We breakfasted in the hotel (we’re staying at La Quinta Inn in Sheboygan), and some of the Speed guys (Speed TV covers motorcycle racing in the US) got talking with us after they saw our Kiwi t-shirts. Morley/Karen: I was wearing my Craig (Shirriffs) Wanganui shirt today. Turns out some of them saw me on television from Salt Lake City. I’m famous!! We left the hotel with two missions: one to buy a new GPS unit, and one to see if we could find a half decent coffee. We decided to knock off the latter first....

May 31, 2012 - Thursday 31st May

Note: we have a very slow internet speed at the hotel and I'm not able to download any of the photos. I'll try again tomorrow might and let you know in tomorrow's update if they're there. Dawn broke grey at Mitchell, South Dakota, but with high cloud. We had breakfast at the hotel. Most hotels include a buffet breakfast in the price of a room. You go to the breakfast room any time between 6.00am and 10.00am (generally) and help yourself from a selection. There’s generally always several cereals, fruit, yogurt, toast bread/muffins/bagels to...

Sep 16, 2010 - A lesson in nutrition

Forestville, Wisconsin is home to Country Ovens Cherry De-Lite where they make dried cherries. Door County is quite famous for its cherries. We learned it takes 8 pounds of ripe cherries to make a pound of dry cherries. A cherry pie needs 250 cherries and a typical tree can produce enough cherries for 28 pies. Most trees live about 25 years but can live as long as 50. Naturally, after all the educational information, we felt obligated to make a purchase. We know the value of having fruit every day so we bought some chocolate covered...

Aug 21, 2006 - Lake Winnebago and Sheboygan

We decided to see Lake Winnebago and go to Sheboygan, since that is another town with a name we heard of before. The lake is 10 miles wide and 28 miles long, so it would take some time to drive around it. But the map didn't look like the roads would go near the lake alot and we thought that we probably wouldn't see much of it anyway because of private homes. And that turned out to be the case, so we didn't attempt to drive all around the lake. Not far into our trip, we saw Elk with large antlers standing in a field alongside the road. They...

Aug 7, 2002 - Sheboygan

Got only as far as Sheboygan by evening. Wanted to see a couple of things there, so found the Baymont Inn to hole up for the night. We snugged in there and didn't leave til noon the next day! Saw they're pretty Riverwalk area, and took a scenic drive along the Lake - many beautiful old homes and nice parks along the lakeshore. Of course, we had to drive out to Whistling Straits golf course, which is the 2004 site of the PGA Championship. We thought we were driving up to Bandon Dunes!! Very much the same feel. Beautiful Clubhouse, two very...
