May 24, 2014 - Prairie du Chien, WI - The Great River Road

(Ron Writing) We had a change of plans this morning. We had been intending to head north along the Mississippi River but after giving it a little more thought we decided to head south along the Mississippi on the “Great River Road” to southern WI. This section of State Route 35 follows right alongside the east side of the River and is designated as a scenic route by AAA. In 2009 we followed the Mississippi on the Great River Road from the Gulf Coast north to southern Iowa but we haven’t driven the River Route north of there. We had...

Mar 22, 2012 - Badger Camp

The Rathe family went to Badger Camp to ride around on the ATV`s. We took Lola with and she love having the wind in her ears as we drove up and down he many paths that lead up and down the hills. We stopped for a little while to look at lookout point and to admire the ruins of the old farm house in the woods. Anna and Bruce each drove an ATV and Ellen drove the ranger as Suzie and Lola rode with. We spent 6 hours there an after we went into town to stop at the burrito store for dinner. Next we are on to the cabin in Guttenberg, Iowa.

Jun 24, 2010 - Prairie du Chien

Today I have continued to be amazed at the beauty of our United States of America. Listening to Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion podcasts, we drove through corn fields, past dairies, and along rivers I can only describe as “picturesque”. I felt as if I was driving through calendar pictures all day long. We have stopped for the night in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, located in the beautiful Upper Mississippi River Valley. We are currently following the Great River Road, which winds for 250 miles along the banks of the Mississippi...

Jun 20, 2010 - Day 3: Indiana - Wisconsin

This morning was a stressful morning for me, and the one I dreaded most; I had to drive through Chicago. It has been haunting me since I found out I had to leave Chris behind for the first few legs and drive it myself. By the time we arrived in the Chicago area, it was 9:45 Eastern Time (the time zone Middlebury, IN is in), but only 8:45 Central time. As traffic picked up and the number of lanes increased, my grip on the wheel tightened and I started to stress. I'm not used to 7 lanes of traffic on both sides, or 14 lanes total. People in...

Jul 28, 2009 - Back in the East for Good

We crossed the Mississippi for the last time at La Crosse, WI and are finally back in the east. We continued down the river on the Wisconsin side to Prairie du Chien where we stopped at the Cannery. It’s one of those places selling all kinds of kitsch and ice cream (it tasted good). The Cannery operated from 1912 to 1947 and canned a couple of hundred tons sauerkraut a year. I’ve been looking for smoked paddlefish since we left Glendive, MT with no luck. I found a store in PdC that sold smoked fish that are locally caught, except the...

May 10, 2008 - Back in Wisconsin

Made it back to Wisconsin. Stayed at Ed’s, had fun making Shannen’s First Communion Dress. Had fun catching up with everyone. Had Kallie over for dinner on her 13th birthday. Babysat the boys on the last night of bowling for Dennis & Laura. Don helped Cliff with drainage in his back yard. Had to dig trenches and put in a basin catch, so the water wouldn’t go into their basement. After 10 days it was time for turkey hunting. Went to Prairie Du Chien at Frenchman’s landing. As we got closer I wondered whether the camp ground would be open...
