Some people we met in Baileys Harbor told us about the Peshtigo fire museum and cemetery so we stopped on our way up to Michigan. On the night of October 8, 1871, Peshtigo, Wisconsin was wiped out of existence in the greatest forest fire disaster in American history. It is relatively unknown because it occurred the same night as the great Chicago fire, which got all the publicity. Tornado-like winds fanned the flames through the forest and town and burned about 1.5 million acres. The majority of the survivors jumped into the cold river...
