Jun 17, 2018 - Day 10

Day 10 20180617 0711-1530 350 miles We got packed up and on the road without incident. This was the earliest we have been able to get started this whole trip. We had an uneventful trip all morning. We stopped for lunch in a large parking lot that had multiple driveways. After lunch Kurt decided that he would drive the rest of the way since we were only about 100 miles from Ft. McCoy where we had a reservation to stay in the FAMCAMP. Shortly after we were back on the road, the truck’s warning system said to check gauges (adventure #15). We...

Oct 21, 2016 - The Mighty Mississippi

La Crosse, WI Today we traveled 113 miles and went nowhere. We made a big loop up the Wisconsin side and back down the Minnesota side of the Mississippi River. First up was Grandad Park, containing Grandad Bluff, which opened in 1912. This 600-ft high bluff overlooks the city of La Crosse. The view of the Mississippi River Valley includes the three states of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. Since the top of Grandad Bluff can be seen from most points in the city, it's home to an annual New Year's Eve fireworks celebration. We appreciated the...

Oct 20, 2016 - This and that

La Crosse, WI We stop to see a number of unusual things but one of our stops today was quite different - the Queen of the Holy Rosary Mediatrix of Peace Shrine. In 1949, Mary Ann Van Hoof reported receiving a vision from the Virgin Mary. She claimed she was told to "bring the truth to people" through prayer and the rosary. Many of the visions Van Hoof saw happened in her back yard at home. 100,000 people attended the vision in August, 1950, and witness accounts vary significantly. The Roman Catholic Church investigated and found the...

Sep 19, 2016 - Day 16, Monday, Sept 19

Not much to do around Albert Lea, so off to La Crosse. We discovered an unplanned Quilt Shop in Hayward about 7 miles outside of Albert Lea. They had a bill board advertising their existence and signs leading us right to their front door! Great shop! I can't get over how different each shop is. After spending some time at the quilt shop we got back on the road towards La Crosse. About 20 miles further we came to the town of Austin, Home of Hormel, and just had to stop in at the Spam Museum. What a kick! I had no idea how many different...

Sep 6, 2016 - Day 1

We had a fun day stopping at Legoland in Chicago! There was NO ONE around, we basically had the whole place to ourselves! We had hope to get to Austin, MN tonight. That would have left us with about an 8 hr drive to Black Hills/Mt Rushmore area tomorrow. Unfortunately, we his a NASTY storm, and visibility sucked in the rain, except for all the lightning! So, we stopped in La Crosse, which is almost to the MN/WI border, but still in MN. That gives us almost 9.5 hrs to Mt Rushmore, so we'll see if we can make it to see it tomorrow, before we...

Landheer Trip 2016!

Aug 10, 2016 - A challenging day

We survived the night, yes! The humidity is crazy, and hot. We didn't make the miles we had hoped due to some truck trouble, and it took a good chunk of our afternoon and evening to get back on the road. We tried to get into a State Park but when we found it, we realized the sites were too narrow and unlevel. So we travelled up the hyway, tired and grumpy we finally found a place by 10:30 pm. Tomorrow is a new day, enough said! Good night 𯘴𯘴𯘴𯘴𯘴

Oct 3, 2014 - Cool on the Mississippi!!

A few pictures of our spot here in the chill!! *)* It was good to have a day to just hang out in a place the furkids could appreciate. Bran sure wanted to go after those tempting black furry squirrels!! Both she and Lily got some good exercise even if they did have to stay on the leash. This cold spell is chasing us all the way down it seems! Joanne said it was to be 40 degrees in North Carolina Sunday!! It's supposed to warm back up by the time we get to our park just east of St. Louis! Whew Head out to the KOA at Rock Island and the Quad...

Aug 24, 2013 - Central Time Zone

We thought Texas had a lot of turbine windmills. We learned they produce the most wind power of all our states. Well, I have to tell you something - on our drive across southern Minnesota on I-90 today, about 280 miles, we saw nothing but WINDMILLS. No lie - miles and miles of windmills - both sides of the interstate. I beg to differ with Texas statistics. Unbelievable! Every bend we came to and every hill we went over, there were more windmills. We crossed the very wide and separated Mississippi River into Wisconsin and are camped in...

Oct 7, 2012 - On to Lovely La Crosse

Brrrr, what are we doing in Minnesota in October? It was bitter cold last night; low down to 22 degrees. Joe disconnected all the water utilities before we went to bed; didn’t need frozen water hoses this morning. Actually, even though the temp was so low, it didn’t feel that bad because the sun was shining and there was no wind. Joe had hooked up the Jeep last night as well so we had minimal things to do before hitting the road. We waited until about 10:30 and then we got moving south, hopefully to a little warmer temps. We made a couple...

Sep 24, 2012 - Visiting Former Co Workers

Goose Island Campground is a huge county campground with over 400 sites that is right along side the Mississippi River that separates Wisconsin from Minnesota. The park is a national wildlife refuge but the river and marsh land around it is apparently a duck and goose hunters paradise because it sounds like a shooting range during the daylight hours. The office was closed when we got in last evening so we took what we thought was an open site but when we checked with the office this morning they said it is reserved for the week so we had to...

Sep 23, 2012 - Farewell Breakfast

A very chilly 28F this morning, seems even colder because of the 15-20MPH wind. This morning we all went out to breakfast then came back to the coach for a nice visit. They wanted to hear me play the banjo but about all I did was make a fool of myself because my fingers just wouldn't cooperate. It was 2PM before we left Rice Lake headed to La Crosse WI. got into Goose Island Campground shortly after 5PM. The drive to La Crosse was still through heavily wooded areas with plenty of corn fields and dairy farms along the way but much more hilly.

Jul 19, 2012 - La Crosse, WI

Most of the day was in Minnesota, but we ended the day in La Crosse, Wisconsin. WE saw some old family farms along the way. They really point to the history in Minnesota and the Scandinavian roots. Another rider went down today. Ray from the UK broke his shoulder in a fall. He was doing what we all do and have been told not to do -- taking a picture while on the bike. All it takes is a moment sometimes. I think I'll refrain in the future. Late in the day, we crossed into Wisconsin and went across the Mississippi. The hotel we stayed at had...
