Jul 27, 2010 - To Hayward, WI
We travel south on Route 13. We pass through Washburn and stop in Ashland. Ashland is another town on Lake Superior. Besides a Wal-Mart, there is a Great Lakes Visitor Center here. It is a huge visitor center with a wildlife boardwalk. They also have another stamping station for the Apostle Island National Lakeshore. After our visitor center stop, we travel west on Route 2 and then south on Route 53. We are planning to stay in Gordon, which is on the St. Croix River. As we near the turn for the campground, we see smoke. What now? The...

Jul 24, 2009 - The Fish that Ate Hayward (and Kathy)
On our way to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, we took a quick swing through Hayward, Wisconsin, home of the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame. As luck would have it, we arrived during the annual Musky Festival. This is a very big deal in Hayward, since it prides itself on being the Musky Capital of the World. This town has such big ambitions! In case you're not aware, musky is short for muskellunge, a huge, toothy fish that has been known to eat beer cans, wristwatches and anything else shiny that drifts in front of its menacing mouth...

May 6, 2009 - Honk....Honk..Honk....BOOM!
We have arrived safely at a REMOTE camp about 20 miles from Hayward, Wisconsin. We have very little bandwidth on the air card, no cell phone signal whatsoever and the park WiFi is not working. I managed to find a large enough hole in the thick tree cover to pick up all three DISH Network satellites, so at least we won't miss any of our favorite shows on TV. As we passed our friend Randy's home, we gave a long and two short honks of our horn and he answered with a one-gun salute from his Ruger 45...thus the title of this entry. I don't think...

Jul 4, 2008 - Hayward, WI
Yesterday we left Lodi, Wisconsin and headed about 4 1/2 hours north to a small town called Springbrook. It seems you can barely find this town on a map, however, we are close to a pretty touristy town called Hayward, also still in Wisconsin. The scenery has changed some and there are more trees, less farmland and less bugs... although the bugs population is stil quite high. This area reminds us a lot of New Hampshire with lots of bears and moose in the area. The weather is also cooler. We needed the heat on this morning as it was in the...

Sep 21, 2007 - With friends in Hayward, Wisconsin
We arrived in Hayward, Wisconsin, after a very short and uneventful drive from Washburn. The weather cleared after some heavy morning thunderstorms and we arrived at Randy and Diana Umbs home before expected afternoon storms. Friends Randy and Diana have offered us a nice spot to park our rolling home for a couple of days before moving on east to Michigan. We look forward to spending another weekend with these fine people. Juanita and I were just considering that last Friday we were traveling in snow and cold. It is about 80 deg today with...

Oct 8, 2006 - A visit with Randy and Diana Umbs in Hayward, Wisconsin
KOA Hayward was not a bad place to stay. No WiFi, cable, or cell phone service, but otherwise just fine. The park is in a very dense pine forest and driving the fiver through the tight turns and around trees was a challenge. We visited Randy and Diana Umbs at their home outside of town. They have a real nice place and Bodie had great time with their dog Sadie, who actually pushed him to play. We drove east about 10 miles to the Stone Lake cranberry festival. There were thousands of people and more booths than I have seen anywhere. The...

Jun 15, 2006 - Minneapolis to Hayward, WI
Minneapolis to Hayward, WI. Had dinner with Mary's brother, Harold and Belle. Stayed an extra day so Harold could custom build an end table for us to place between the driver and passenger seats when they are turned around. Lucky us!!! The midwest states have been green and beautiful. We have resisted the desire to linger there, and are keeping our eyes fixed on getting to the Maritimes.

Aug 19, 2005 - Hayward, WI
After the storm in Manistique, we were pretty happy to get out of Dodge. The morning we were leaving, we wandered up to the "rec room" to get some coffee, since all our stuff was either soaked or packed away. Turns out the campground we were staying at attracts more than its fair share of retired big rig drivers and auto industry workers. We got to talking to several of these folks over coffee, and when we told them what brought us there (short version is "we both got layed off and we're taking advantage of the time"), the universal first...

Jul 30, 2005 - A Week in Hayward
July 24 - We left Grand Marais and retraced our route down to Duluth and then took a detour down to Menomonie, Wisconsin to a Newmar dealer. We had developed a water leak that had soaked the carpets and driped into the basement. It has been a recuring problem and was getting worse. We were able to park on their lot on Sunday and they got us in first thing Monday morning. A short while later they said the problem was solved by replacing a rubber washer in the washing maching supply line where it connects to the washer. It took less than two...

Jul 21, 2005 - Hayward KOA, Hayward, WI
KOA HAYWARD, WI 7/21-7/27 We had no particular reason to pick Hayward, WI as our next stop except that it was almost halfway to our next destination: Pardeeville, WI. We lucked out on the campground again. It is a huge campground nestled in a pine forest. Trees had been cut down just to make a site for each trailer. I loved hearing the wind whisper through the trees and watch the gentle dance of their trunks swaying. The only thing bad about all the trees - no satellite dish. I know, I know, how can I complain about that? But it's not like...

Viv and I found this little town in Northern Wisconsin and liked it so much, we bought it ! It's a quaint and quiet town with a lot of history. Cool summers and lots of snow in the winter. Plenty of fishing and snowmobiling. We've attached a few photos and welcome you to stop by. We also host the World Lumberjack Campionships as well as the Musky fest in June. Musky is a big fish Richie and Viv
