Jul 12, 2012 - Hayward, WI
We were in a lazy mode and left late morning to head towards Lake Superior. We took Highway 63 north, a scenic route through cornfields, small unincorporated towns, mountains and lakes. We stopped after traveling less than 150 miles. Nice, not to have to rush anywhere and take our time. We found a campsite on Lake Nelson just outside the town of Hayward. Our only complaint about the campground was the annoying Deer FLIES. Worse than mesquitoes in Minnesota and/or Alaska. Hayward had a WalMart so we stopped for groceries. Groceries may last...

Jun 21, 2012 - Chippewa Campground, Hayward, WI
The morning of June 21st we left Gull Lakes and drove 196 miles to Chippewa Campground near Hayward, Wisconsin for a two night stay. This campground is also located in a heavily forested area and the mosquitoes were as tenacious. Kathy was happy though because we had full hook-ups and she could get all our laundry done which had been piling up. Our next stop will be Iron River, Michigan and hopefully there won't be any mosquitoes there. This campground is packed with fisherman and their boats. I think the official sport of Minnesota and...

Jun 17, 2012 - Konkler's at Hayward, WI
Friday, June 15, 2012 -- Arrived at Hayward, WI and Lowell’s brother and sister-in-law’s home. After lunch we went to pick up the pontoon from another location. Actually, Bruce and Marilyn took the pontoon out a few days earlier and when they got out on the lake they realized someone had stolen their gas from the tank. They drifted for quite some time and then ended up across the lake at a friend’s dock. Bruce filled the pontoon with gas and Marilyn and Lowell headed across the lake and Bruce and I drove back. Later on in the afternoon we...

Aug 13, 2011 - Leaving Hayward, Heading East
Time to wrap it up here in Hayward and wanted to send along some of the “highlights” of our stay while here for a mere week. One thing we have decided in this lifestyle – one week is JUST not long enough to stay in any one place unless of course it’s merely a stop to reach a destination. One week is great if the weather cooperates and there are no RV mishaps that require attention; and of course you know we have had both (bad weather as well as RV mishaps). Several of you asked why we selected Hayward to stay in – and quite frankly think...

Aug 7, 2011 - Arrived in Hayward, Wisconsin
Awakened to overcast and drippy skies! Unfortunately, the usual progress we make on the day before we move was thwarted due to the heavy rains we had yesterday afternoon, so it all had to be done today before we could depart. So, we got off a bit later than usual, but still before 1100 and smooth sailing the entire route. We were a bit apprehensive going through Duluth after seeing how much construction and detours were all around the city, but fortunately, the route we took was easy enough to get over the bridge and into Superior,...

Aug 3, 2011 - Moose Lake
Moose Lake CG So the decision is to move westward. We'll leave plenty unseen back in the Upper Peninsula but we'll be coming back. Along the way to this National Forest CG we stopped for lunch at Sunday Lake, WI and had the entertainment of an hydro boat race. The photo shows the launch area and campground where the race was being held. We haven't seen hydro racing since the big boys were racing back in IL a few years ago. This time it was mini racers but the action was plentiful and we had a great time eating lunch and talking with other...

Jul 8, 2011 - I found where a deer beds and a few Knowltons
8 July Once was lost now is found. The Deerbed Lodge is up for business, if only for a while. Can we, the family, raise 2.4 million? While it is found and a resort again, the owners wish to sell. So the story goes. I went to town and found the old candy/fudge shop again, Jim! Onto the Historical Museum to find any info on Deerbed Lodge. The women there has lived in Hayward since ’42 and could remember the name but not the owners or where it was. She made many calls on my behalf to others in the community and still no luck. One guy thought...

Jul 7, 2011 - Lakes of the north
7 July I made it up to the big Chippewa Flowage lake area, east of Hayward. I’m just 12 miles from Big Round Lake. The land of Lienenkugels Beer. I haven’t been through Hayward yet. I was going to stay further south but found the campsite in Birchwood sort of weird, so I came up County Road CC. This is the north woods. The roads seem to be cut out from the woods with a giant mower. Trees, pines line the straight byways. Took a little paddle about the lake this evening. I saw a loon and a heron. Lots of power boats on this lake. Tomorrow...

Jul 31, 2010 - Hayward, WI
It is a good day for wildlife but not a good day for picture taking. We travel the west side of the Chippewa Flowage. A black bear crosses the road in front of us. We get a good look at the bear but it is moving into the forest. I get no pictures. Further, up the road, we see two deer. One of the deer still has its spots. Again, I get no pictures. My timing is off. Along today’s chosen route, the only lake access is from a resort or from private property. We push on to The Landing where we rent a boat. We are on Lake Rice. It is beautiful...

Jul 30, 2010 - Hayward, WI
Today is a fishing day. We map out a route through the Chippewa Flowage. The lakes are interconnected but we are reminded at the bait and tackle shop that they are considered separate lakes. We pass Round Lake. We find two boat ramps with docks. John fishes. He gets bites but no hookups. We come to a resort called “The Landing” on Rice Lake. We gather more information on boat rentals. We can rent a boat this afternoon but the weather is about to turn. We have a great lunch at The Landing instead. Walking to the car, we see an eagle flying...

Jul 29, 2010 - Hayward, WI
We start our day exploring Hayward. We do not want to travel far as we are waiting for the Chevy dealer to call. We visit Hayward’s municipal park. You can judge a town by its parks. This well maintained park is on Hayward Lake. It has a playground, a beach and a picnic area. John fishes. I take pictures. I find very odd pinecones. I see a new bird that I need to identify. I take pictures of another dragonfly. My visitor guide says that I am Oding. Oding is similar to birding or butterflying except I am admiring dragonflies. The car...

Jul 28, 2010 - Hayward, WI
The Dodge Dealer in Hayward went out of business. We cannot support all the Dodge Dealers of the world. We go to the Chevy dealer in the morning and explain our problem. They will get a hose for us. Where do we go next? That is a silly question. The reason people come to Hayward is to see the National Freshwater Fishing Hall Of Fame! At least, it is the reason I brought us here. It is the perfect stop for John and me. He is interested in the museum and I have many photo-ops. The world’s largest Muskie is here! In the museum, John shows me...
