Sep 15, 2011 - Screwed by Politicians

Well, our travel plans are on indefinite hold. The sale on our home is snagged in City politics; our request for a special use permit has not been denied but the process is being delayed by political machinations. We're down to 12 days before Peggy's retirement and this will be my last entry until the house is actually SOLD and we can once again consider our morph into mobile retirees. :-(

Sep 11, 2011 - All Rummaged Out

The rummage sale went off without a hitch. We did pretty well, but there's still a lot of stuff left. I suspect much of it will end up in the tip. But, we do have an estate agent who will come and do another sale later in the year. We do have some art, and some older items that might fetch a better price then. Tuesday is the zoning board meeting. Our daughter, son-in-law and the two of us are on pins and needles about how the meeting will go. I happened to meet one of the members of the zoning appeals board on Saturday (different board,...

Sep 6, 2011 - Display Tables

Our Son in Law dropped by today. We talked about what tools he wanted to keep (he does a lot of woodworking and auto repair) and what we should sell @ the rummage sale. He also brought several LONG display tables for the rummage. I'm amazed at how much stuff we have already found to sell -- and this is just a sale for the clunky stuff that we don't think has much value -- the estate agent will hold another sale later on in the year for artwork and valuable. We're just making room for that one. But.... each day brings us a day closer to...

Sep 5, 2011 - Getting Closer

17 more working days left and it's been a good few days. Mike and Katie have been in and out of the house a few times -- refreshing their memory about the place that may soon be theirs. We had a good friend of ours over to look at the stuff we'll be wanting to sell -- she and her husband are estate sales specialist and I'm sure they'll handle the process for a fair and friendly price. And it' will get done which might not happen if I had to do it. Yesterday our daughter and g-daughter made a trip around the neighborhood canvasssing...

Sep 1, 2011 - Positive Feedback

I'm in a much better mood today! About 10 days ago I tried contacting my alderman via email. Finally today he called me back! I think we live on a different time. More importantly he sounded positive, supportive, and offered information that may help during out city committee meetings/hearings/public meetings. It could still easily be a couple months (2 mos. +/- ) till we get a zoning go-ahead, assuming that we do. But at least we have another supporter among the city-men. My previous dealings with him have not left me feeling that he was...

Aug 29, 2011 - Plodding Along - editing, editing, more editing

I love my kid, but.... I say that with laughter in my mind because this 2 month pre-retirement was "supposed" to be a very different time than it has evolved into. When we invited them over on to pick out furniture to keep instead of our downsizing I never dreamt it would result in such a complicated mess. If we had more than one child my wife and I might have cut the "why don't we buy the house" conversation short, gotten the house on the market and called it all good. Instead.... I had to be a good father. :-) As mentioned (I believe)...

Aug 26, 2011 - Architects and Forward Moving Plans

My SIL is moving forward with plans for the buiding with a zeal and enthusiasm I remember from my own 40's and wish I had today. He's been here a couple times sussing out details about the building so that his business plan to the zoning commission can be complete. This morning he and I had a meeting with his architect to review ADA changes to the sections to be rented and input from a specialist. Good to get expert opinions! I let the dealer know about our revised pickup date for the Journey, and last night Peg and I started making plans...

Aug 25, 2011 - Staying Focussed

I'm sure that everyone who has retired has gone through the same things we are going through. At least on some levels.... There really isn't anything new in this world. What is new is the places this process has taken me. Mentally. Never in my life have I felt so hamstrung. (Patiently) Waiting on other people is not my strong point. Most of my professional life it hasn't been a big thing -- I've been self-employeed much of that time. Neither has it been so for Peggy who, though she works for a huge organization in the healthcare field has...

Aug 24, 2011 - Speed Bump

I wish I knew how our retirement plans were coming along... but I really have no idea. We've hit one of those speed bumps along life's driveway. We are down to 24 working days (still a couple days off in there) for her Sept 30 last day. But our plans to put the house on the market and get busy downsizing are hung up because of our kid's sudden interest in buying the house if they can get a zoning special use consent..... and that's where we sit. We only have the one child, and she managed to marry the only guy from among the ones she dated...

Aug 17, 2011 - People Surprise You

Our daughter and her husband came 'round yesterday to talk about what from the house they wanted to keep, and what we were going to put into storage (seeing as we aren't sure how long we'll be Fulltiming it). After a couple hours of moving from room to room and tackling a couple discussions about what we might want to do before listing the house I figured we were just going to kill some time till Peggy got home from work and we could go our to dinner together. Things had gone well. And then there was a little odd pause.... and I thought to...

Aug 16, 2011 - Downsizing part 1

This week is set-into motion week. Today the family come over to scavenge for things they want to keep from the house. Wednesday we meet with a friend in the art business to see about selling some art works we have had in the family for a while. And Wednesday and Thursday we meet with real estate agents. By Friday night the house will be on the market and then the nail biting and churning stomach begins. The transition from working to retired has always seemed real, but now it's getting scarey in a good way.

Aug 15, 2011 - The Trouble With Routines

As we get closer to retirement day (Oct 1) and get our old life sorted, sold, and shelved we are also trying to master a new way of thinking: from how to conserve water while boondocking, to where to find the next night's parking spot and how to stay in touch with family. I follow several fulltime RV'er blogs, one of them is Gypsy Journal. A recent entry had him going on about comments that his travel plans seemed to be falling into a routine. The comment resulted in a defense (of sorts) of repeat visits to the same place. I've been...
