Jul 30, 2015 - Plymouth to Chilton ~ 27.8 mi

Ride Time ~ 2:37:22 Average ~ 10.6 mph Perhaps today could be summed up in one word - windy - to the extreme. We knew the winds would be strong. We were up and rolling out about 6:20am. Normally we would hope to find a nice quiet morning but the winds were already at 10 mph and pretty much out of the W to WNW. There were a lot of hills to climb and most of those were as we headed west into the headwinds. I decided to walk three of those hills and Ann one...she is a strong climber. Google Maps is a great routing tool. It will often give us...

I seems like I've been here for a year and I certainly have done a years worth of studying. Finally we have all taken the 6th and final exam. Starting tomorrow we will work on business related case studies that we turn into presentations. I got 99% on the final exam so I got pretty high scores on all the tests. I hear things get really hard in June and July when we are in Munich but for now we get a bit of a break from studying for several hours every night. It was perfect to have the last test before one of the biggest celebration weekends...

Mar 11, 2012 - End of Week 5

I got the 4th and reportedly hardest test back last Monday and I got a 97%. Very good scores so far. I think I'm pretty highly ranked among the 50 or so original students. The material got decidedly less difficult because we have moved away from Krebs Cycle, glycolysis, respiration patterns of bacteria and such and now moved on to the bottling/canning and packaging part of the course. The packaging of beer is in many ways as important as what ends up in the bottle but studying the material is not nearly as complicated. Just memorize the 9...

Mar 3, 2012 - End of Week 4

Yesterday I took what I was told was the hardest test we would take of the 7 weeks in Chicago. I felt like it was a little harder but so did everyone else so I guess I probably did better than average again. Last weeks test you can see. I now have 95 - 100 - and 97 scores on three tests so I guess I should be pleased. After studying this material 8 hours a day in class and several more hours every night for a week, we were all more than a little pleased to be taken on a field trip to a newer but very successful brewery in urban Chicago...

Feb 26, 2012 - End of Week 3

The first big news is that I'm back in Kansas City for the weekend. I have been checking almost every day for available seats that I could used on short notice with frequent flyer miles and at the last minute I got one. So yesterday I walked around Brookside back home and watched Netflix at home with some good food and the dogs who love me. I provided evidence of my success on the second test last Friday. I was one of just a few that got them all right and now have an average score of 97.5 for two exams. I will get one back tomorrow morning...

Feb 18, 2012 - End of Week 2

So last Saturday I did spend the day as a tourist and ended up at the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art. A few pictures you can see. After that just a lot of walking around and then I met up with 5 other brewing students at a brewery called "Revolution". Pretty good beer but I think the brewer there specializes in a couple of types of beer that are not my favourite. The highlight of the week was the field trip that we all took to the Briess Malting facility in Chilton Wisconsin. We all got on a bus early in the morning and drove three...
