Jun 5, 2011 - A weekend with some grandkids in Chetek, Wisconsin

Chetek River Campground in Wisconsin is a great family destination, about 90 miles from Minneapolis. The place has been in business for years, and attracts a lot of permanent summer residents, as evidenced by the decks, barbeque grills, and awning lights. And, almost every one of their 100 campsites has kids, the blacktop trail around the camp has a couple of them going by on bikes every minute or so. There was only one other motorhome in the park, everyone else was there with a travel trailer, and they really cater to the family trade,...

Sep 22, 2010 - Chetek, WI

Today we are driving to Chetek, Wisconsin to spend a few days with our friends, Bob and Eunice Dewey. We met them several years ago in Texas and have been friends ever since. Before we got to their house, we stopped at Leinenkugal Brewery in Chippewa Falls to take a tour. A nice little brewery and not bad beer. We arrived at Bob and Eunice's on Wednesday afternoon and they took us out for a boat ride on some of the many lakes that are in Chetek. We had a great time seeing their town, eating at a nice local restaurant and meeting some of...

Midwest Tour 2010

Jun 28, 2010 - Monday Chetek, WI

Slept in late and then went to the laundromat and did clothes. Bob ran down to the root beer stand and had lunch while Darby and I guarded the washers and dryers. Then we stopped at no less than 4 stores before finding a requested refrigerator magnet that said "Chetek, WI" and a couple of postcards. Returned all the clean clothes to the RV than went back to the B&B Bar and Grill for a pizza for dinner. Then one final visit with Pat and Dave (Roger and Sydney were still there) at their fantastic lake house. I so love this house, it is so...

The Trip of 2010

Jun 27, 2010 - Sunday Chetek, WI

Bob and his cousins Gary and Roger played golf this morning. Barb got up early and drove Bryce to the Minneapolis airport. Her work is sending her to Albuquerque, New Mexico while James will be taking the rental car back to Eau Claire and flying back by himself to Virginia. When Barb got back, she took a nap and Bob went over to help with the clean up at Pat and Dave's place. Then this evening we went to watch the local ski show; the "Chetek Hydroflites". Then all the remaining relatives went out for a final dinner. Everyone was kind of...

The Trip of 2010

Jun 26, 2010 - Saturday Chetek, WI

Happy Fiftieth Anniversary Pat and Dave The party was a smashing success. Family and friends started arriving in the afternoon. The roasted pig arrived and was carved around 4 PM. It was not a sight for the weak of heart - the skin and hair was still on the pig when it was removed from the roaster. Dinner was served and besides pork, there were two kinds of salad (wild rice and strawberry), onion pie (absolutely fantastic), and bread. Then there was the beer truck with 2 types of beer, wine, tea, and lemonade. Pat and Dave's son Marty...

The Trip of 2010

Jun 25, 2010 - Friday Chetek, WI

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BOB Bob got up early to go over to help Dave do manly work - move tables, etc. Bryce came by the RV to pick Barb up so we could find a Walmart Supercenter and pick up some things that were needed for tonight's dinner. On the way back from Walmart, Bob called and said that they were having lunch at the Catholic church. Bryce and Barb picked up James from the motel and went to lunch at a place called Bob's Grill. Just after we'd ordered our food, Bryce spied Kathy walking down the street (I thought she'd seen a major car...

The Trip of 2010

Jun 24, 2010 - Thursday Chetek, WI

Bob broke the face of his phone. Now he can only answer calls, can't use his phone directory. So anyone who really needs him might want to call him on my phone (904-566-9517). My phone is also the one that we will put on a Canadian plan next week - since his is broke and the AT&T plan didn't work very well last time, so we're giving Verizon a shot this year. James and Bryce flew in to Eau Claire and rented a car and got to Chetek around one. We picked Bryce up at the hotel while James was staying in his room to telecommute to work in WVA...

The Trip of 2010

Jun 23, 2010 - Wednesday Chetek, WI

Bob originally was going to play golf this morning, but then remembered that the USA was playing Algeria in the World Cup playoffs. So instead, he set his clock and got up this morning and watched a close game as the USA moved ahead by winning by only 1 goal over Algeria. We are now in the final 16 teams still in contention for the prize. Later this afternoon, we went to Pat and Dave's church for their strawberry festival dinner. We had barbeque sandwiches, potato salad, baked beans, chips, etc and for dessert there was strawberry...

The Trip of 2010

Jun 22, 2010 - Tuesday Chetek, WI

We drove the Historic Bluff County Scenic Byway - historic because it felt like the original wagon trail at times. Passed through Spring Grove, Minnesota - first Norwegian community in Minnesota. Also passed through Tilden, Wisconsin which is a half-way point between the Equator and the North Pole. We arrived and checked into our RV park and shortly thereafter got a call from Pat that they were having dinner at the B&B Bar and Grill. Barb had seen this place on the way through town, so we said we'd be right over. Another loud meal with Pat...
