Jul 11, 2014 - Apostle Islands

http://www.nps.gov/apis/index.htm I never thought I would find a "New England Fishing Village" in Wisconsin. The village of Bayfield is located on Lake Superior. Of course it isn't New England, but it has that atmosphere. I loved the quaint 'back in time' feel here. We stayed at a wonderful little RV park, on a hill that overlooked Lake Superior. The area around town was abundant in fruit/vegetable farms. U-Pick strawberries, blueberries and raspberries were plentiful. We stopped for strawberries with the most amazing sweetness. They were...

Jun 9, 2014 - Bayfield, WI - A Walking Tour of Bayfield

(Ron Writing) It was very cloudy this morning but it didn’t rain and by afternoon we had some sunshine. This morning we took a long walk to see more of this charming and quaint town. Bayfield has a population of less than 600 but it sure seemed larger than that when we walked around town to see some of the grand old houses. I suspect some of these houses are used seasonally by folks that aren’t counted in the population figures. There are also very many businesses for such a small town but that’s to serve the tourist industry. For lunch we...

Jun 8, 2014 - Bayfield, WI - Wisconsin Lake Superior Byway

(Ron Writing) This afternoon we left Superior heading east on WI-13. Highway 13, also known as Wisconsin Lake Superior Byway, Wisconsin’s newest scenic byway, winds along the south shore of Lake Superior. It is a good paved road that passes through heavily forested land, a few small and unincorporated towns, and some lakeside resort towns. It was a beautiful drive. There is a bridge closed between Cornucopia and Red Cliff so we had to detour on County Road C to Washburn and then continue north on WI-13 to Bayfield, WI. Bayfield is the most...

Oct 1, 2012 - Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

Today we took a 3.5 hour mid-morning cruise around the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. There are fourteen islands all total. The ride was very smooth even though at times the water became rough. Unfortunately the islands all look alike. There were very few differences. The most interesting was the furthest away from shore. And it had a lighthouse and interesting caves in the rocks at the shoreline. After we got back we had lunch and then I went to three different apple orchard farms. There were many different kinds of apples. I got two...

Aug 22, 2011 - Number 44

Today, we moved into Number 44 = the 44th state we have stayed in since we began RVing. It is now easier to count the states we have not visited: Hawaii, Rhode Island, Minnesota, Connecticut, Oklahoma, and Iowa. We will pick up two of these on our way south next month. -- We left Iron Mountain under clear skies and headed northwest on Highway 2. We crossed into a small corner of Wisconsin for a few miles before traveling back in Michigan. We passed through lots of small, dying towns with old brick buildings. I often wonder how they must...

Pretty Damn Nice!

Aug 18, 2011 - Madeline Island

Madeline Island Nancy was up early in the morning. She was out the door in a flash and walked over to the beach across the street to take some sunrise shots. It was a beautiful morning and the sun was at first red and then gold as it rose over Lake Superior. She took some great shots. When she got back to the room we decided against staying a second night and loaded our gear into the truck. We took advantage of the continental breakfast and scarffed down a couple of pastries and coffee. We were anxious to hop on the ferry for the short...

Aug 17, 2011 - Superior Overnighter

Copper Falls We loaded up the truck on Wednesday morning and headed north for Lake Superior. About 50 years ago my grandparents took my brother Larry and I on a trip very similar to the one we were now on. Probably, the trip was the same time of year. Copper Falls State Park is a very scenic section of Wisconsin back country. There are actually three small rivers involved with the multiple water events. There are some great cataracts, several waterfalls, and numerous deep holes. The water is a very deep brown color, transparent to only a...

Aug 16, 2011 - Apostle Island Cruise on Lake Superior

A beautiful morning for a cruise. We hurried into Bayfield to get our tickets for the Apostle Island Cruise Service, leaving at 10:00 am and returning at 1:15 pm. We rode on the Island Princess cruise ship, seated on the lower level, protected from the sun and wind. The cruise included seven of the 22 islands, featuring several lighthouses. The pilot provided some history of the islands, noting that the origin of the name Apostle Islands has been lost. Several islands still have lighthouses. The Raspberry Lighthouse has been restored to its...

Aug 15, 2011 - Bayfield, WI

After a Subway breakfast sandwich, we drove over to the local Chevrolet dealership and had the oil/filter changed in the Roadtrek. Back on the road, we drove through Colby, WI, home of Colby cheese? Wisconsin is known as America's dairyland, and we certainly saw MANY dairies along our route. We also saw miles and miles of cornfields and soybean fields. We stopped at Phillips Cafe in Phillips, WI, for lunch. This 1940s-style cafe displayed mounted animals and a fish. Local residents were busily discussing politics while they had lunch in...

Aug 12, 2010 - Twelve, Seriously

It took a week of being parked in Minnesota, but our new Ready Brake hitch finally arrived and we are back on the road. We drove to Wisconsin’s extreme north and visited the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. The Apostle Islands are located in Lake Superior, surrounding Wisconsin’s Bayfield Peninsula. It is unclear how they got their name. Since they are called “Apostle” Islands, I expected there to be twelve islands and each island to be named after one of the twelve apostles (Peter, James, James, Paul, Mark, Matthew, Luke, John,...

Jul 25, 2010 - To Bayfield, WI

On June 24, we crossed from North Dakota back into Minnesota. It is July 25 and we will leave Minnesota today. Some places we just like. Minnesota has been a great state to visit but we now head to Wisconsin. We travel east on Route 210 through Jay Cooke State Park. We happen to know a place to fish. John gives the St. Louis River one more look. For a moment, we consider staying another day. We see a sign for kayak races. That would be neat to watch. Our GPS wants to take us through Duluth and Superior. We are determined to avoid them. We...

Jul 21, 2010 - Bayfield, WI

Wednesday July 21st. – Tried to upload several photos. There was a glitch. Will retry tomorrow. As we had planned, we took the car for an early brief tour of the Bayfield, WI area. It was so charming that we decided to say over & Allan wanted to take a “cruise” of the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. We walked around the marina & area for a while, then returned to the rig to move sites which was required for us to stay over another night. This new site was much easier to level. Don’t know what creatures live here but Bailey is crazy about...
