Sep 2, 2018 - Wanoka cg

We traveled through rain and clouds from Michigan and made it to the Chequamegon natl forest and to a great little CG on Wanoka lake. It's everything last night wasn't- it's quiet, we're the only ones in this area and you can see the lake. The skies cleared and it's about 70 here. Going to eat Wisconsin bratwurst and fresh corn tonight!

Aug 11, 2015 - Ashland, WI

Tue, 11 Aug: We finally pay for services... After a week of boondocking and dry camping we decided to stop where we could fill our fresh water tank and empty the not-so-fresh tanks. We're not close to being in "crisis" after a week, but it is prudent to get these chores out of the way. After two very delightful days at the Ojibway Casino east of Marquette we got things ready for the road and rolled wheels a few minutes after nine. Back on M 28 west thru Marquette and toward Wisconsin. M 28 met US 2 east of the Wisconsin border and we...

Aug 6, 2015 - day 2 going west

Woke up to a beautiful sunny day. Paul had a good night at the casino and was ready to move on. Headed west on Rt 2. Stopped in Naubinway, MI at The Country Girl Cafe for breakfast. It is a quaint little Ma & Pa restaurant. It was decorated in antique dishes and a collection of Coffee mugs from around the country.Your meal is served on all different pattern dishes. The owner told us she wanted it to feel like you were in her home having a meal. The food was excellent but the prices had Paul growling. They were a little pricey. All that hard...

Jul 27, 2015 - Wisconsin...Ashland to Ironwood

At the bottom of the Bayfield Peninsula is, Ashland, the commercial base for the area. This charming port city sits nestled in the southern tip of Chequamego Bay. Ashland is a historic community with spectacular murals on a number of its downtown buildings depicting historic events. It is also home to Freehands Farm, a wonderful restaurant housed in a barn on the edge of town. Our dinner here was just after a nice rain, so we sat on the outside deck and watched the double rainbow during our meal. Ashland is home to the outstanding Northern...

Aug 7, 2014 - Ashland, WI - City Park

The 89 miles from Bruce Crossing, MI to Ashland, WI was a short trip with about half of it covering the same area we had been through on the Ontonagon trip so not a whole lot of travel pictures. We were able to find a real nice site in Kreher Park and set up shortly after noon, having water and 50 amps, so-so Verizon, and we had to maneuver a little bit to get the satellite around the one lone tree around us. We didn't do much else on that day or the next but relax. Tuesday we headed for Bayfield, WI and took the 3¼ hour Apostle Island...

Jul 31, 2014 - Ashland,Wisconsin

We camped at Ashland City Kreher Park. Our site was right on the water. We had a front roll in one evening making a dramatic sky. Ashland has a series of murals painted on buildings that depict scenes from their history. We parked our cars and took a walking tour of the downtown area to see most of them. One of our group narrated the tour telling us the significance of each mural. One mural was in the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center which is a must see for anyone who visits the area. As an unexpected treat, the group was invited aboard...

Jul 30, 2014 - Ashland, WI

We left our campground at 9:45 AM and around 11 AM we entered Central Time Zone so we gained an hour. We traveled 151 miles to the Ashland City Kreher Park. It is a very nice campground right on the water of Lake Superior. The weather was beautiful when we arrived. The sun was shinning so after we got set up, I went outside to sit and read. It started to get dark over the water and we could see a storm coming. The wind came up and the rain came down in buckets. We had some hail also. That lasted a couple of hours and then the sun came out...

Jul 22, 2014 - Goodbye Michigan

Tiki torches jammed into the ground and circling the trailer. Chili pepper lights strung across the awning. Home-style barbeques lashed onto trailer bumpers. Apartment-sized refrigerators placed outside the trailer. Kids zipping through the park on their bikes. Rip-roaring fires on a 70 degree evening. This describes some of the things we saw during our one-week stay at a city park in Hancock, Michigan. It was our last week in Michigan. We arrived to a nearly empty park on Sunday but by Friday evening the RV park was filled with weekenders....

Jun 10, 2014 - Ashland, WI - Touring the Apostle Islands

(Ron Writing) This morning we went on the Apostle Island Cruise Company’s Morning Grand Tour of the Apostle Islands. The weather was perfect with no wind, sunny skies, and pleasant temperatures. Our tour boat held around 100 people and this morning there were so many folks signed-up that they also ran a second boat that held about the equal number of people. There are 21 islands in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore – Madeline Island, the largest of the Apostle Islands would make 22 but it is not part of the national lakeshore. Our tour...

Jul 6, 2013 - Lake Superior and Wisconsin

Days 120 - 124 of The Big Trip On July 2, we drove from Superior to Ashland, which is about 60 miles. We had planned to stay at the Kreher City Park, where they have RV parking. It's a beautiful little park, right on the bay, but they had only one space available, so we headed east to a Casino and found plenty of spaces. The only problem was that it was in a parking lot, but available during this holiday time. After we got settled, we went into town to see if our mail had arrived. It hadn't, but we discovered Ashland to be a beautiful...

Jul 16, 2012 - Minnesota to Wisconsin

Today was another travel day from Minnesota to Wisconsin (Routes I94, 71N, 4 and 2). Once we got on Route 71, it was a leisurely, scenic road, unlike the boredom of the interstate. We stopped at a picnic grove on Cass Lake for lunch. We noticed a lot of trees down in the area & thought they may have had a tornado. We asked someone and it was a bad windstorm that occurred on July 2. It created quite the mess. Some campgrounds are still closed. We entered Wisconsin at 5:30, at Lake Superior (largest body of fresh water in the world). It's...

2012 Northwest Trip

Jul 14, 2012 - Ashland, Bayfield, WI

It rained last night. That's something we have seen very little of since we left home. Today we took a drive around the Peninsula, covering Ashland and Bayfield County. This area is extreme northern Wisconsin with the Apostle Islands to the North and the towns of Ashland and Bayfield on Chequamegon Bay on the east. In Ashland we stopped at the Farmers Market. Sadly to say that there were very few veggies or fruits. The drought has really hurt the farmers in the area. We did find some sweet corn and a cantaloupe later in day. We bought it...
