Jun 20, 2012 - New River Gorge Sightseeing

We spent the day at the new river gorge. We drove along the gorge in the morning. We stopped at Hawks Nest State Park for breakfast with a view at the lodge. There is a Tram to the bottom of the gorge and a Jet Boat Ride (which operates every day but today). It is a sign - we must come back with the convertible one day. In the afternoon we went to the New River Gorge Bridge. This is the longest arch span in the western hemisphere. We took a very steep and very winding road that goes into the gorge under the bridge. Many hairpin turns and...

Jun 19, 2012 - New River Gorge (we arrive)

Moved to Summersville Lake Resort today. We will be here 2 nights. It was only an hour and a half drive so we took our time leaving Bulltown. We got here around 2 and spent the afernoon checking email, cooking steaks, and looking at the lake. People next to us are from Florida escaping the heat (of course here it's a high of 90 today and tomorrow). They are on their way to Gettysburg next and had lots of information on the area of Georgia we will be going to eventually. I have included pictures of the lighthouse going up. The owner was...

Aug 3, 2011 - Stopover in Summersville

The road had a lot more ups and downs today. We averaged just over 10 miles to a gallon on our trip from Brunswick to Charlotte. The mileage dropped to 7.8 mpg on today's trip from Charlotte to Summersville. We are at the Mountain Lake Campground for tonight only. The campground is somewhat rustic with dusty gravel roads, but our site is more than adequate. We will reach Pennsylvania tomorrow.

Apr 6, 2010 - Summersville, West Virginia

We started out the day with our tour of Lowes. They are getting ready for a big car show this weekend, so we were unable to drive on the track. We did however tour the pit areas and the infield. I think it would be fun to camp here and take in a race in the future. There is also a short track, a dirt track, and a drag strip, all within the 1200 acres of Lowes Motor Speedway. The owner of this track Bruton Smith owns 8 race tracks!! Next we toured Hendrick Motorsports. This included the museum and the two shops (5/88 and 24/48). You could...

Oct 24, 2009 - New River Gorge Bridge

The traveling from Hagerstown over to Summersville was not so great, lots of rain and wind. But it was worth it as the sun came out for a short time while we were at the "Bridge".(they shut down the bridge one day a year so people can base jump from the bridge, people "are crazy") The gorge and river are beautiful and so is the bridge. Summerville Lake is beautiful with the rock cliffs around the shore. We are very glad we came here. On to Paintsville, KY to visit with Harold & Lorana.

Jul 7, 2009 - Hawks Nest

Views don't get much better - Tuesday, July 7 Today we headed for Hawks Nest, a West Virginia State Park on the New River Gorge. We’re looking for a jet boat ride and this is where you come to find one. The park is on the east side of the gorge, a few miles downriver from the famous gorge bridge. The good news is; there is plenty of parking. The bad news is; it's an 800 foot drop from the parking lot to the river! Fortunately there’s a tram. You board the tram from a lodge at the rim, and all the way down the view is magnificent. You can’t...

2009 Spring 2 Fall

May 20, 2006 - Flatwoods, WV

We departed Beckley traveling North on US-19, stopping for visits in Summersville then on to I-79 North to Sutton. We are staying at Flatwoods RV Park for the weekend. We arrived on the day of the season opening of the Mounfain Lakes Amphitheater featuring country music singer John Anderson (Seminole Wind). The amphitheater is right next to the RV park, so we enjoyed the concert from our site. Jaynie and I also enjoyed the shops at Flatwoods Factory Stores.
