May 6, 2013 - Fayetteville WV
Today was wet, interesting, satisfying and frustrating. Sit down, be quiet and I’ll explain. We hit the road about 9:30 and headed north on US 19 a couple miles to US 60 east till we hooked up with I-64 east to The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs. This backroad route is slightly faster and about 20 miles shorter than taking the interstate the whole way so we opted for the trip back through Rupert and Rainelle this time. The weather was cloudy but no rain until about 30 minutes before we got to WSS, then it started drizzling which...

OK, pay attention. Today was kind of a busy one so I’m gonna fly through what we did. We left the bus a little after 9:00 and stopped at Bob Evans for breakfast. I have never been to a BE before so it was new territory for me. My review? Nothing special, but I was able to get a cheeseburger for breakfast which bodes well for a future visit from me. From there it was off to the New River Gorge Visitor Center to look at the exhibits and the bridge from the viewing platform. It was all really neat and the bridge is a very impressive piece of...

May 4, 2013 - John Brown's Raid
We drove to Harpers Ferry today to learn a little more about John Brown. John Brown was a well know abolitionist in the 1850's. He had traveled to Kansas in 1855 to help prepare his son and other free-staters to defend theselves against the pro-slavery forces that were trying to take over the state. He led an outnumbered group of men at the Battle of Osawotamie, but his group was routed by the "Border Ruffians" as the pro-slavery forces were known. We visited the battle site in Kansas last year. Brown left Kansas in 1856 and headed back...

We pulled out of Grandma’s and headed north on I-65 to I-265 around the east side of Louisville, then eastbound on I-64 for 234 miles – give or take – until we got onto US 19 just north of Beckley for the 17 mile ride northeast to our home for the next 3 nights at the Rifrafters Campground in Fayetteville WV. We beat the rain that pummeled Louisville and the Derby and except for a few sprinkles along the way, it was a pretty uneventful 6 hour trip. There were 2 tollbooths on I-64 in WV and we willingly gave them $3.25 at each in the hopes...

May 3, 2013 - 29th Infantry Division Memorial Highway
We've been traveling along US 29 since we entered Virginia. US 29 runs for 1,036 miles from the western suburbs of Baltimore to Pensacola, Florida. In Virginia it was designated as the "29th Infantry Division Memorial Highway" in 1993. It is in honor of that Army unit, which, along with the 1st Infantry Division (Big Red 1), formed the spearhead of the American infantry that landed Omaha Beach in Normandy on D-Day. Among the components of the 29th was the 116th Infantry Regiment made up of National Guardsman from Virginia. When we traveled...

Apr 27, 2013 - Blue Crab Fun Bunch
After arriving home we were so glad we could attend a campout with our local Good Sam Chapter, "Blue Crab Fun Bunch". Saturday is always and on your own day. So Debbie dropped Tom off Gathland State Park and he hiked the Appalachian Trail back to Harpers Ferry where we were camped (about 12 miles) Debbie even with her new knees can't seem to walk that far especially up hills. That evening at 5:30pm the group got together for a potluck dinner and our monthly meeting. Afterwards we played some games before heading back to our RVs for some...

Mar 31, 2013 - Milton, WV, Jan-March 2013
After all the excitement of the coach repairs we had to do during 2012, we are definitely looking forward to a much quieter 2013. And so, we have offered up a prayer to the RV Gods. The weather got MUCH colder and we worked hard to keep warm and keep our stuff from freezing. To demonstrate how cold it got here we've included one photo of the ice dam we had between the convenience center on the coach (where all water services are located) and the ground. We've also included several beautiful photos of the icicles that hang from the rocks...

Well, we had another issue just in time to close out 2012. We noticed that the carpeting in the back bathroom was wet and couldn't figure out where it was coming from. We used towels to dry it as well as we could, but the wood portions at the bottom of the cabinets were becoming saturated...prime conditions for mold to set in. We tried to get an appointment to have it fixed, to no avail. So we decided to try to troubleshoot it ourselves. We determined that there was a leak from the water pipes to/from our washer/ dryer. The washer is way...

November was a busy month for us getting lots of outside work done. The owners also left for 10 days, a combination mini-vacation and KOA Convention. So we were here by ourselves to manage the campground! There is a gal who works Monday thru Friday, 9am-2pm, but we did work 10 days straight. We got so much done, the owners were very pleased when they returned. Came home from grocery shopping one afternoon and found that our freezer had stopped working! We only lost a little bit of frozen food, but it took us over a week to get the...

We started getting the park ready for its annual Spooktacular the last weekend in October; we are sold out! The park is all decorated and really looks nice. Some of the guests went all out decorating their campsites. There was trick-or-treating, in costume, through the park, voting on best decorated campsite, a "Monster Mash" (Halloween music and games), lots to do. Even though the weather had turned quite cold and a little wet, everyone had a good time. Folks were still out by their campfires! And again, by Sunday afternoon, the park was...

Oct 24, 2012 - Huntington, WV Revisited
Today’s drive took us through eastern Kentucky. This is a really pretty part of the state with I64 winding up and down the mountains and valleys. Fall colors are past their peak, but with the sun out today the colors are much brighter than yesterday when it was mostly cloudy. After crossing over to West Virginia, we stopped for lunch in Huntington. Guy Fieri has visited West Virginia a number of times and there were several DDD establishments in the Huntington area to choose from. We selected the Central City Café. It was a good choice. Sue...
