Sep 26, 2019 - Getting ready to head south

Preparations are underway for another adventure. We are planning to drive in October to Mesa, AZ, where we will be spending the winter. However, before we set up housekeeping in Mesa, we are planning to leave the car in AZ and fly off to San Juan, Puerto Rico to board a ship to sail down the east coast of South America. We spent last winter in Mesa, the location of our first adventures as snow birds, or more appropriately for west coast Washingtonians, rain birds. We had an interesting enough time that we decided to spend another season at...

Off to South America

Sep 11, 2018 - Preparations

We are heading out next week, September 20, for a six weeks adventure. We will start with a few days in Frankfurt to adjust to a different time zone and to do a bit of looking around. For the Frankfurt part we will be on our own. We will fly to Amman, Jordan from Frankfurt to join an Overseas Adventure Travel group, the same company we used last year for our Tanzania experience. We liked the educational opportunities the company gave us; we did a lot of "learning and discovery." The groups are small, the guides terrific, and we had such a...

Jun 27, 2017 - Through the WA Okanagan back home to Tacoma

After a farewell breakfast with Carmen and Jeff we made our way back to Tacoma. Evidently we have dodged a heat wave here; after temperatures in the 90s over the weekend Tacoma is a mellow 74. As we drove through the Okanagan on the US side we practiced spotting antlerbrush, sagebrush, and rabbitbrush (I keep wanting to say hare(hair)brush. We have seen a lot of beautiful country; we needed jackets and raincoats up north and went through hot temperatures as we came through the Okanagan. It has been great fun to learn more about Canadian...

Apr 6, 2017 - In Tacoma for April and May

The plan is to be at home for April and May. Tutoring at the elementary school in the Tacoma school district and the backpacking for homeless kids should keep us busy for the next couple of months, and we hope to focus on exercising and getting in shape for future trips. We plan to make a driving trip in June to northern British Columbia in Canada. Roger's daughter Deborah works way up north in Dawson Creek, and his brother Jerry with wife Irene are mining for gold up north as well. Carmen, the other daughter, spouse Jeff and Roger and I...

Mar 20, 2017 - Home in Tacoma for February

February found us back in Washington in the rain. This year has been record breaking in its precipitation. We were in our routine of exercise, reading, seeing friends and generally staying active. I really enjoy tutoring in an elementary volunteer reading program called Read 2 Me. I go twice a week and work with four kids individually. Three are third graders and one is a second grader. Since I taught mostly at the high school level, I have not worked so much with teaching reading. In this program we work from the list of Fry Sight Words;...

Oct 18, 2016 - Back at home

We arrived in Tacoma on October 4 and it took a little over a week to adjust to west coast time. We are more likely to sleep through the night now without looking at each other at 2 am and wondering whether we should get up and read or try to fall back asleep. We have been doing reentry into routine with exercise and daily life. I have signed up for a continuing education French class because I enjoyed talking to folks in France so much; I have several books on my reading list not only from France but also on Irish history. We saw an...

Jul 25, 2016 - Lots of Autos

Harold and Nancy LeMay started collecting cars and automobile artifacts and eventually their collection numbered in excess of 3,000 autos and thousands of artifacts. The collection is broadly American and spans the twentieth century. They did not want their collection to be lost, so he decided to open a museum. It took many years of planning, development, and fundraising and in 2012, the LeMay America's Car Museum was opened. The building is designed like a parking garage. Visitors circle around going down four floors, then circling back up...

Jun 2, 2016 - Site seeing Tacoma

We both did our morning walks, but Mt. Rainier was hidden behind the low clouds. Larry found a River Walk and an interesting mural of a tunnel that was very lifelike. We had lunch in the coach and then went touring. We drove into Tacoma to see the Chihully Glass Bridge and walk around by the Marina at the south end of Puget Sound. Visit Chihuly Bridge of Glass herefor more information. It was a mix of old and new and culture and entertainment. There was an old historical Cereal Mill building that was for "Loft Living". When we returned to...

May 25, 2015 - Seattle/Tacoma

After two nights at Jantzen Beach RV we were ready to move on. Due to the holiday, we ended up at Majestic Manor Mobile Estates & RV Park. Majestic it ain't but adequate. All gravel sites with full hook-ups. Level and very large. Not elegant, but as I said, adequate. Again, need the converter box for cable TV, but antennae works just fine. Not far from Tacoma City Center and most museums. You drive through the mobile estates to get to the RV park. Drove along the coast and found several seafood restaurants. Checked them out to see who...

May 22, 2015 - Tacoma-Seattle and trying AGAIN!

Well, here I go again! This will be the third time I tried to post an entry to MyTripJournal! I type and type, then it disappears! VERY FRUSTRATIING! I am now writing in a Word Doc, then hope to cut and paste into the journal so I don't lose everything. Trying to remember where I left off. Oh, yes..Jantzen Beach RV. We arrived in Portland after a 250 mile scenic drive and went to Hayden Island, the location of Jantzen Beach RV. We entered the office and met Erika. Notice i said met, not were greeted by. Not nasty, but very matter of fact...

Mar 28, 2014 - 4th District - Spring Conferences Begin

The round of District Spring Conferences began today and got off to quite a start. We had a tire blow out when we were passing Ellensburg. We called AAA and they came out and installed the spare -- one of those skinny temporary tires. He suggested we stop in Cle Elum to get a replacement tire. We arrived in Cle Elem and the store did not have a suitable tire, so our only option was to limp over the pass to North Bend. Of course, it was raining and snowing, so driving was interesting. However, it was also a good thing because it kept that...

Aug 24, 2013 - Tacoma and Walt

One of our reasons for coming on up to Washington was to see Bill's 97 year old Uncle Walt. Walt is one of Bill's favorite people and it had been about 6 years since we were last out here. We drove across western Washington to Tacoma and spent the afternoon talking and playing poker. Walt's daughter Caroline and her family came to go out to eat with us and they took us to Harmon's Brew Pub in Tacoma. Very good beer and fish tacos (I figure I'll eat all the seafood I can while here!) We're boondocking in the assisted living parking lot -...
