Apr 24, 2018 - Hatfields & McCoys got nothing on this.

I continue to be surprised at how much Fran and I seem to be able to pack into a day. Our original plan for this trip was to spend most of our time in Port Townsend, with overnight trips to see the tulips (Skagit Valley) and to visit Victoria, British Columbia. We thought we would also make either a day trip or an overnight trip to Seattle. The day Fran headed to the airport in Anchorage she was unable to find her passport (which had been located earlier and put in a special place so she would not forget it…. which she didn’t; she just...

Sep 1, 2011 - San Juan Island

We finally made it to San Juan Island today, and it was well worth the trip (and getting up early)! We got to the ferry terminal a little after 8:00am to get in line for the 9:00am ferry. Since it was the beginning of a long holiday weekend, we didn't want to take a chance on missing it. We were there in plenty of time, but the ferry was full when it finally departed. It was very foggy, which made the ride winding through the San Juan Islands pretty in a different kind of way. The ferry landed at Friday Harbor, and we then began a scenic...

2011 Northwest Trip

May 3, 2011 - 4th Entry

We drove the coast of Newport OR, it was a cold and windy day, but the water was beautiful. The Tsunami Area signs were a little eye opening considering they had just had the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The rocky coast is so different than what we’re used to on the east coast. While in Oregon we drove through the Columbia River George. There were so many beautiful waterfalls. The trees are so dense and the area is so damp that all of the tree trunks have moss on them. Where they hang over the road it’s like driving through a tunnel. We...

Jul 9, 2010 - Bill and Herb's excellent Adventure, Chapter 4

July 8, 2010 – Thursday – The itinerary today is travel to Sucia Island, one of the most popular of the San Juan Island Marine Parks. Our start at Anacortes is the eastern end of the San Juan cruising area. Sucia Island is about the northernmost point. The state parks and recreation folks have a bunch of parks that include mooring buoys and docks and shore facilities like picnic tables and campsites scattered through the islands. The guide book says that up to 700 boats visit Sucia on a busy weekend. Even though this is Fourth of July week,...

Aug 18, 2009 - Fabulous San Juan Islands

Spent the entire day on fabulous San Juan Island and Orcas Island. If you are a boater, drop everything and get yourself out here. Can't think of a better place to boat or kayak. Beautiful, clean, blue water with 100 islands plunked here , there, and everywhere. Those islands are covered with a thick blanket of tall evergreens with an occasional gorgeous wood and glass house tucked in between those amazing trees. Peaceful, restful, - definitely a place for a memorable vacation. The ferry docked at San Juan Island at 10 am. We drove...

Aug 2, 2009 - San Juan Island

We got up early this morning to head over to Anacortes, Washington to catch the ferry to the island of San Juan which is in the San Juan Islands chain. We were hoping that we could get an 11:00 AM ferry but we couldn't get on one until 3:10 PM and it was 15 minutes late which didn't give us a great deal of time on the island. However, we sure made the most of our time there. The ferry ride itself was fun. When we first got on we found a window seat and were amused by watching the Pelagic Cormorants who had made nests in the bumper pilings...

Our 2009 Travels

Oct 17, 2008 - San Juan Islands Visit

Today was a very busy day. We decided to take the ferry over to explore the San Juan Islands. We had to be in line for boarding by 8:30 A.M. The cost for both of us and the car was only $48. Ollie went for free. :-) The ferry was very nice and roomy with nice comfortable seats. The ride took about 1 hour and 20 minutes on the way there, coming back we stopped at Lopez Island so it took a bit longer. We loved the town of Friday Harbor. It is the largest town on San Juan Island. We had the whole island to explore so we only spent a short time...

Jul 10, 2008 - Orcas Island. It's Pretty.

Dear Rocky and Lynn McGinnis, What the hell? You told me to come all the way out here to Orcas Island and then you don't return my phone calls? I am not happy. The good news first...I enjoyed puttering around the island on my moped and this is a very pretty place to look at. Westside beach resort was nice and had good espresso. There is a cool pottery place. That is all. The bad news: Orcas Island is the furthest island of all the San Juans and took me 4 hours roundtrip on the ferry. There is nothing to do here except kayak in a group tour...
