We woke early to a day already warming up. Another 100 degree day on the menu…in Yakima, that is. Driving north the weather stayed in the high 80s to low 90s. What a relief! Not really. We diverted 2.5 miles west to get fuel at Fred Meyer and do some last minute grocery shopping. The fridge and freezer are stuffed with stuff from home. The drive from Yakima to Oroville, WA was a study in dry, barren hills green only very close to water or cultivated fields, orchards or vineyards. After leaving the farming community of Ellensburg we climbed...

From Spokane we traveled northwest, intending to stopover one night at Grand Coulee Dam. The drive was not real interesting (compared to the past several days) until we approached the valley where the dam is located. Then we dropped down several hundred feet as we neared the dam site. When this dam was built it was an engineering marvel. Over 21,000,000 cubic yards of concrete went into the construction. At the time it was billed as the “eighth wonder of the world.” It is a massive structure. We arrived here expecting to stay overnight in...

Miles Today: 189 Day: 26 Total Miles: 2682 The plans for today was to drive to Electic City, WA where we would stay overnight and visit Grand Coulee Dam and come back at dark to see the laser show they display on the water flowing over the dam. But, due to mechanical problems with the lasers, there was not going to be a show. So, instead of staying there, we decided to push on to Oroville, WA where we had planned to meet up with Dave and Jan Jenkins, our 4th in the caravan. Oroville is about 5 miles from the Canadian border where we will...

September 3, 2007 Oroville, WA Today's Travels It is a good thing we only had about a 140 mile drive today because we slept in and got a late start but that's OK because we are rested. We had traveled this entire road back in May and everything is reversed; what were descents are climbs and the right turns are left turns. You probably didn't need me to explain that. It is a long climb out of Merritt and then once you get to the top, the road drops for 20 miles until you are driving along the shore the of huge Okanogan Lake. The further...

May 20, 2007 Oroville, WA Today's Travels We traveled mostly north today about 235 miles using US 395 out of Pasco for a ways before moving over to WA-17 that took us all the way to Bridgeport where we picked up US-97 and that's where we ended the day. It will take us across the border tomorrow. All of these are very good 2 lane roads except for US 395 which is a divided 4-lane freeway. Mickey and I found it interesting that we started in Pasco at an elevation of about 550 feet and had only climbed to about 1100 feet here in Oroville. We...
