Apr 6, 2013 - 10th District Conference
We had a nice drive out to Aberdeen. Of course, as we got closer, we ran into rain. You know, Aberdeen / Hoquiam / Cosmopolis only have three seasons: June, July and Rain. The Aberdeen Post is very nice. It is an older home that the members are refurbishing. They have quite a few historical items on the walls, so it does give you a sense of history. They went all out for the luncheon. The food was great (made to order) and the decorations were great. The meeting went well. The Commander did everything right and kept the meeting on track....

Apr 28, 2011 - A girl's day..
After breakfast Dianne and I decided to see what shopping there was around us. We took off in John's truck and headed for the 1st place we wanted to see. Believe it or not, it was Ace Hardware. A little store, stocked with tons of stuff. Don't you just love hardware stores? Got a nightlight and a little trash can for the trailer. Then, we headed for the city of Raymond. Driving along the coast line was so neat, the scenery was beautiful, even if it was raining. We got to Raymond and visited the Willapa Seaport Museum. Small, neat museum,...

Apr 27, 2011 - a day at Granny's
We had breakfast at Dianne and Phil's (Phil cooked..I made sure John noticed..hehee). Yummy ham and eggs. Then, we loaded into Phil's truck, trying to avoid a downpour. Off to Westport to see the sights. Since it wasn't exactly tourist time, some of the shops were not open. But, lucky for us Granny Hazel's Candy and Gift shop was open. Made a beeline for the candy, checked it out, then to the back of the store where we found great weatherproofed, removable hoods and lined jackets 2 for $50. We left with 4 and of course some candy. Super good...

Apr 26, 2011 - 1st Camping of 2011
Today was the beginning of the camping season (for us, anyway) and we were excited to hit the road. Had the trailer "Springized", loaded with food and drink for 4 days at Grayland Beach State Park between Aberdeen and Raymond. We planned this trip with our good friends, Phil and Dianne Lyman. They had just purchased a trailer and thought it would be fun for the 4 of us to go on a trip. We got up, packed the trailer and drove about 1 hour to Dupont, Washington to meet Phil and Dianne at Farrell's Wood Fired Pizza for lunch. We had one of...

Aug 31, 2010 - Aberdeen, Washington
Rain, rain and more rain. Turkey and I have had to entertain ourselves in a small town that doesn't really have anything to do or go (in the rain). After eating a large breakfast and drinking 400 cups of coffee, we decided to walk down to a Walmart which was exactly 1 mile down the road, and we shopped for another 2 hours. Back to our little old motel, and we have been catching up on computer stuff for the rest of the afternoon. During our walk, we took a couple of pictures (attached). We explored some of the history of the folklore of the...

Aug 30, 2010 - Aberdeen, Washington
Well, we have been watching the weather every day, trying to decide which direction we should take next. We wanted to ride over to Vancouver Island today, but Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are calling for rain :( We headed out in the direction of Seattle. It took us an hour to get through the US Border. With that task behind us, we headed out on the Interstate to make up some time. About 20 miles north of Seattle the traffic came to a complete halt, and then was bumper to bumper until about the same distance south of the city. Did we tell...

Oct 1, 2008 - Aberdeen, WA - Ruby Beach & Drive Along Coast
(Ron Writing) It was Elena’s anniversary today! Six years of retirement and freedom from the drudgery of the 8 to 5 routine. It was foggy in the rain forest when we got up this morning but that soon cleared-up and by the time we left there were just thin high clouds and the sun was peaking out a little now and then. We drove west out of the park back to US-101 and continued south. The highway runs southwest through dense forest land along the Hoh river. A couple miles before reaching the coast we entered the narrow strip of Olympic National...

Jul 3, 2008 - Forks to Aberdeen, WA
Wow, we both slept really hard - ready for the road @ 7:45 AM (PT). Its VERY cloudy - w/severe storms to our E & N & temps in the low 60s this morning. We stopped for gas before leaving Forks ($4.32/gal) - but the pumps were soooooo slow that after about 15 mins & $2 worth of gas we pulled across the street to a Shell station ($4.34/gal). At 8:30 AM (PT) we entered the HOH Rain Forest. The road is excellent & there's no traffic. The first 12 miles is 2nd & 3rd growth trees, pastures & clearings for homesteads (some over 100 yrs old). Over...

Saturday night at Fort Stevens State Park. Sunday a little quiet time, then some tidy up details, then tour of Fort Stevens. Volunteers recruited us for the tour and tried their best to get us to stay longer. When we said we were the way to Alaska, they changed there response. They had been twice and want to go again. Next, we picked up one more Lewis and Clark site at Cape Dissapointment (now a Washington State Park) on the Washington side of the Columbia. The interpretive display is well done. Although it is now early May, we can...

Mar 26, 2008 - Hoquiam river, WA
Hoquiam River, WA March 26, 2008 Today was a tad more “interesting” than I wanted it to be! We left Waldport at a reasonable hour (9:00), in the rain. In northern Oregon, and Southern Washington, we were right at the point where altitude, temperature, rain, snow, fog meet! As we drove along the ocean, we had rain and a little fog. Every once in a while we’d go up a ridge about 200 feet in total, and the rain would change to a mixture, then to straight snow. Huge flakes! Back down, and the snow reverts to rain. Even though I didn’t like...

Aug 6, 2007 - Aberdeen/Hoquiam, WA
We spent the weekend with Scott & Rhoda Olmstead. Bruce worked for Scott 20+ years ago in Flagstaff, AZ and again 15+ years ago in Fernandina Beach, FL. We enjoyed some great food and scenery at the Lake Quinault Lodge in Olympic Nat'l Park, but the most fun was just hanging out. Also, it was very cool to see their new 6-acre property and the drawings/scale model of their future house ... we're looking forward to seeing the life-sized model next time.
