Jan 28, 2013 - Moving into Dixie
Monday, January 28, 2013 Finally, an uneventful day. We drove 302 miles today straight through to Augusta, Georgia from Wytheville, VA. We passed through North Carolina and South Carolina and established we are definitely in the South. We left the snow behind in North Carolina and hopefully see the last of snow for us this season. Pulled into Flynns Inn Campground a “private campground” in Augusta where Cindy and Penny placed “cash only” in supplied envelope and they placed it in a carved out slot in the door on the porch of what I suppose...

Sep 27, 2012 - Day in Wytheville
I started the day at Big Walker Lookout before. I visit every time I get the chance. At an elevation of 3,405 feet, Big Walker Lookout affords one of the most spectacular views of the Appalachian Mountains. Looking out over the patterned farms of Virginia in one direction and the untouched wilderness in another, it's hard to believe that the views are real. As if that wasn't enough, there's an 100' observation tower. On a clear day, you'll even be able to see five states, and I have, but today was too foggy to see 5 states today so I headed...

We have been their several times it is very nice and you get to eat at the original restaurant. Was a busy day yesterday but got a good nights sleep and ready to go. It is sunny this morning and a little cool, had to turn on the heater this morning. I had forgot this is the first time we used the heater and it set off the fire alarm which put cookie into a panic. Let me go time to break down and get moving. It's about...

Here we are at Wytheville, Va day one of our trip to Yellowstone Park. Getting out this morning was kind of messy due to the rain but as the day went on it got nicer. We left the house between 10-11AM and got here around 4PM with a couple of stops to eat and go to the rest room. You do that when you are over 60. Well one down and nineteen legs to go.

Staying at Wytheville KOA - 185 drive from Broadway, VA - just a spot in the road on our way to Pigeon Forge, TN. On our way here we stopped at a Amish village in the Shenandoah Valley - it was a fun spot. Bought a few jams and soup makings from the Amish and some fresh produce (locally grown). It's not often we get to stop at places of interest when we are driving because the parking isn't "Big Rig Friendly" - we'd picked up a brochure on the place at the last campground we were at so we knew there was parking available!

Jul 5, 2011 - Tour Jackson's house & grave / Lee's Chapel & tomb
Visiting graves was the order of the day. But not just any graves. Today we paid our respects to Robert E Lee and Thomas J (Stonewall) Jackson. Their grave sites are less than a mile apart. Jackson’s grave and monument is in the center of Stonewall Cemetery. His statue / monument by Edward Valentine are truly a work of art. Lee’s Chapel is located on the campus of Washington and Lee University. The highlight is a statue of Lee, in his uniform, asleep on the battlefield (the "Recumbent Lee"), designed also by Edward Valentine. It is a...

Fueled the jeep and hit the road to head south into NC. We have friends that have houses near Boone NC and we have never seen them so we figured we would go check them out. The trip took us onto some of Virginia’s back roads and through towns like Sugar Grove, Troutdale and Mouth of Wilson. How do you name a town Mouth of Wilson? I’m stumped. Anyway, it took us right at about 2 hours to get to Boone and see Jerry and Joan’s house. “Jerry, your driveway was a little slippery because of the leaves and recent rain and you have some leaves on...

May 28, 2011 - Unexpected Pleasures
Before moving toward the northeast today, we visited the Murphy Gas Mart in Johnson City, TN and filled up with diesel. It was an all time low of $3.669/gal!! The goal for today was to (1) visit The Carter Family Fold (carterfamilyfold.org)in Hiltons, VA and (2) travel the Coal Heritage Trail in West Virginia. The road to Hiltons, VA was very narrow with no shoulders but well worth the drive once we arrived. We had been told about The Carter Family Fold by Patt (a Bluegrass enthusiast we met in Cedar Key). Although everything was closed, we...

Got up and slowly got our act together and headed back to my brother’s house to tour their property since it was raining when we were there Thursday night. Weather today was mostly cloudy, but no real rain until about 7:00pm. They have 14+ acres on top of a hill overlooking a little valley with views in the distance of the town of Wytheville, into West Virginia and Mount Rogers, the highest point in Virginia. Very neat place to live, but it is off the beaten path. In fact you are so far off the beaten path that there is no path. Not...

The weather got real nasty about midnight so we didn’t get a whole lot of sleep. Had wind, rain and thunder but no tornados where we are but had a couple in the area, the closest being in Murfreesboro which is just NW of us. Woke up at about 6:00 to a tornado watch and severe T-storm warning but only rain and thunder at the campground. We unhooked and got on the road at about 8:30 to head mostly NE through Knoxville TN toward Wytheville VA. Overall we were able to skirt the worst of the weather but we did drive through a bunch of different...
