Sep 3, 2018 - Candy Hill Campground

You know that it is another boring driving day when the only photo Sam took was of the Red Lobster where we stopped for lunch. But lunch was good! And I am fascinated with the source of the campground names we are coming across. When I asked about this one, I was told that the owners of the property used to have a dog named Candy. When Candy expired, it (didn't find out whether it was a he or a she) was buried on a nearby hill. When the campground was later built on that same hill, it stayed "Candy's hill." Should get to Pennsylvania...

Jun 14, 2018 - Winchester, VA Walmart

This is an overnight stop. We attempted to stay at the Walmart in Staunton, VA but saw signs predominately posted not allowing any overnight parking so we moved on north to another Walmart we were familiar with in Winchester, VA. While driving to the next Walmart we decided to call the Staunton store and ask about the new signs. Much to our surprise we were told to ignore the signs and we were welcome to park overnight. Since we were well on our way to Winchester, we decided to stay there.

May 9, 2017 - Arizona to Virginia - 2340 miles

Arizona to Virginia - 2340 miles We left Arizona and headed East to attend our great niece’s wedding in Virginia. There was no way to avoid Tornado Alley, and we would be traveling during prime tornado season, so weather forecasts had our attention. We have had some close encounters in the past with tornadoes (see our entry from May 8, 2015 for Oklahoma City), and did not want to experience that again, so we paid attention to two storm fronts that were moving across our path. We waited until the first one moved east of...

Jun 5, 2016 - Winchester, VA

Sun, 05 Jun: Back on the road again... After almost two weeks at the Thousand Trails Williamsburg we're finally giving those tires some exercise. Once the Kirschs left it wasn't much fun so we'll head north to where they, and the rest of the family, can be found. The weather was threatening with predictions of severe storms. We opted to get going early and hope we could outrun the worst of the storms. We did! After moving the coach from our site we hooked up the car, checked lites and brakes, and got underway at 0730. It took some doing to...

Aug 1, 2015 - Winchester, VA

So, we’ve had two very good days! Yay!! Yesterday was a little cooler day than we’ve had in a while. When I stepped outside I could feel a definite difference in the air, not so hot, not so humid. We drove over to Centreville, just a little over an hour away, to visit with Marvin’s granddaughter Summer and her sweet family. Braelynn just turned five and what a bundle of energy she is! She’s smart as a whip with a very vivid imagination; she’s also craftsy and is a real animal lover. She’s very excited that she’s going to be the big sister...

Jul 30, 2015 - Sweltering

If you’re wondering why you haven’t heard from us about all the exciting things we’ve been doing and all the fun we’re having its because we haven’t and we’re not. We’re having AC problems in this 90 degree weather. Our no. 1 heat pump runs for a short time, anywhere from 15 mins. to two hours and then throws the breaker. We’ve spent two days trying to get it repaired or replaced, but no luck. If you call Camping World or any other RV repair they tell you it will be 2 to 3 weeks before they can even look at it. RV service is definitely the...

Jun 14, 2014 - Trip Rpt. No. 5 -- Winchester, VA

I decided to "camp out" in the Winchester, VA, area after I left Lexington on 3 June. I wanted to investigate Winchester, go to a nearby battlefield (what a shocker), catch up on some paper work, and see Char, not necessarily in that order. Both Lexington and Winchester are cities in the long valley created by the Blue Ridge on the eastern side and the Allegheny Mountains on the western side; the Shenandoah Mountain is a 70-mile long ridge that is part of the Allegheny chain which, in turn, is part of the Appalachian chain (or so I am told...

Dec 30, 2013 - Southward Bound - Day 1

Sunday, 29 Dec 2013 We began our travels just after 7am, and traveled in rain, heavy rain most of the time. Also we encountered heavy stop and go traffic in the Harrisburg, PA area. We normally try to be in a campground before sun down, but between the rain, traffic, and traveling 540 miles, we arrived at Candy Hill Campground, Winchester, Va after sun set.

Oct 12, 2013 - Just into Virginia

Yesterday it was our intention to get through MA, CT, NY and into PA. But as we were on our way Jack got concerned about his tires so we detoured by way of Camping World in Kingston, NY. We are like new parents with a baby...concerned about every sound our RV makes. It turned out to be nothing so we ended up on a side road and decided we weren't going to get to PA so looked for a campground. Found one in Deer Park, NY just 18 miles from the tri-county corner (NY, NJ, PA). It looked fun as had a playground with a great big "jumping pillow"...

Aug 17, 2013 - Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia

August 16 We had a slow day yesterday. Started a little later than usual but headed to the Gettysburg National Park and Museum where we watched a 20 minute History documentary on the Battle of Gettysburg. We then were introduced to a Cyclorama entitled the Battle of Gettysburg. This cyclorama was created in 1884 and is 42 feet high by 377 feet wide and weighs four tons. It is created on several canvasses and then sewn together in a circle. They add foreground material (sand, shrubs, cannons, etc.) and then use lighting to highlight areas as...

Apr 19, 2013 - You Took A Fine Time To Leave Me Loose Wheel!

Hi all Y'all. We left Rocky Top CG yesterday morning, weather fine but overcast. We did all the usual stuff that's done on the road stopping for gas and the odd rest stop. Following my usual routine doing a walk around the trailer checking for external signs of trouble. We arrived at Candy Hill CG here in Winchester, Virginia, stopped at the registration office and was led to our camping site. The first thing I did was get out of the truck and go around the back of the RV to unlock the door for Rita and HeyU coming from the other side. When...

Jan 13, 2013 - Southward Bound - Day 1

Saturday, 12 Jan 2013 Began our travels at 7am, temperature was just above the freezing mark at 34 degrees. Most of the day we drove in fog and/or drizzle. Just enough wetness on the road for the tires to kick up ‘yucky’ road stuff, but not enough to clean any of it off. By end of day, both vehicles were pretty dirty. After about 2:30 in the afternoon, the sun made an appearance. We traveled 540 miles today, easily getting to Candy Hill Campground, Winchester, Va just before sun dawn.
