Oct 22, 2012 - Confederate Breastworks

After leaving Natural Chimney Regional Park, we drove to the Confederate Breastwork Interpretive Site Trail about twenty miles outside of Staunton. The trenches dug at this site date from the Civil War and were used to defend Staunton during the Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1862. The trail is about a half mile and winds along the fortifications dug into the top of the Shenandoah Mountain. Signs all along the trail tell the story of how the breastworks was built and how it was used to defend against Yankee invaders. Since we were rapidly...
