We departed the Chesapeake Park about 9:30 a.m. and drove the 195 miles due west to the little community of Rustburg, VA. Rustburg is only about 20 miles from the city of Lynchburg. Our long-time readers know that we've been here many times before, for a week last year even, and all the grandkids come here with us. It's a great spot from which to drive to all the touring spots you'll read about here. The farthest is Charlottesville and Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, about 80 miles north. The others are closer. Oct 24, 2007 - Where Our Nation Reunited

We've been in Virginia for three weeks and have thoroughly enjoyed exploring this wonderful state filled with so much history. While staying outside a small town named Rustburg, our first bike ride was to the town of Appomattox. During the Civil War/War Between the States/War of Northern Aggression (you decide what you want to call it), the town consisted of a train station and a few homes and businesses.
