Sep 24, 2019 - Route 11 potato chips

We stayed close to the park today and first went to the Route 11 Potato chip plant. We had been to their older location many years ago - this is a new much larger facility and we watched as the chips were fried and packaged behind glass windows. No photos were allowed. We did buy some chips and wished we had bought more as they are available in specialty stores and not large grocery chains. We then drove up to the Shenandoah caverns but chose not to tour the cave. We did find the Yellow barn and another building that was called American...

Sep 23, 2019 - Patsy Cline museum

Today we drove to Winchester and first visited the visitor center that has lots of information about touring this area but also a great section dedicated to Patsy Cline who is a native. We then stopped by the oldest home in town but did not have time for a tour of it. Went to the house Patsy Cline lived in with her mother when they moved to Winchester. The docent was really great - told us a lot about Patsy's life here and played the first recording of Patsy on the Arthur Godfrey show. We learned that Patsy's mother was the babysitter for...

Sep 22, 2019 - Edinburg festival

We went into Edinburg today to the annual festival and the streets were lined with cars for blocks on end - luckily Ray found a spot not far from the Mill that is the focus of the event. There were a lot of people and a lot going on. We missed the bed race but saw the frames in a trailer. They were cooking apple butter, had music groups that included Gospel, bluegrass, etc. under the tent. We went into the mill that is a gret museum on 3-4 levels. This mill was saved from Sherman in 1848 as the Union troops burned the valley to end the war...

Sep 21, 2019 - Shenandoah Valley Mt. Jackson

We are close to New Market VA, had an uneventful drive out of Washington DC but are getting Stink bugs. As we sit in the campground they are showing up all over the outside of the Eagle and want to fly in when the door is opened. The campground host says she sprays peppermint water on her house to discourage them as they don't like it. We went to Dollar General and found some peppermint and will try it. Surprising that we made it through Pennsylvania without them. Apparently they come out when it's warm and they are experiencing a very warm...
