Sep 1, 2014 - Onancock, VA to Elizabeth City, NC

8/30/14: Portsmouth, VA-We are up early to begin our journey since, as you read in previouls post, that we were not sure where we were going today. Following our bread crumbs out the inlet was nice, as the stress of hitting bottom was minimized. As it turns out, entering this creek is not that big a deal, as long as you are paying attention. We never saw less than 10' under our keel, but we understand that one inch out of the channel and one will be calling the tow boat. We even notice that "G3" is missing at a turn that we did not even...

Jun 8, 2014 - Carolina Beach to Portsmouth, VA

5/27/14: Carolina Beach to Elizabeth City, NC: We plan a fairly long first day to Camp LeJune anchorage since the weather is predicted to get a little windy. Also, one of our favorite spots to stop, Surf City marina is out of business. We were to stop in Swansboro, but no room at the marina there since it is Memorial Day weekend. We stop to remember the troops who gave their lives, and we got to watch from our boat at Carolina Beach some very nice fireworks. We also get to take Happy Clamz to one of our favorite dives for breakfast and they...

Jun 8, 2014 - Portsmouth to Hampton, VA

6/6: Smithfield, VA- After some discussion, we decided to go up the James River as Happy Clamz and Free Spirit go their separate ways. HC goes to Deltaville so they can catch up with another boat that we met on the Great Loop in 2006. FS heads to Crisfield where we plan on going in a week or so. We decide on Smithfield, VA of the famous ham fame. There is a lodge/marina there that is as quaint as can be. If you are looking for a nice place to go to either by car or boat, this is the place. We want to come back here. The Pagan River leads...

Nov 12, 2012 - A very extended Day One

November 12, 2012 Portsmouth, VA - N36:49.900 W076:17.723 High 73/Low 57 - Winds SSE 11mph - Partly Sunny - Tonight Showers Hi All! Well...what can I say. It was a different first day than we planned. We headed down the bay...sun was out, getting toasty, wind was mild, all was good. We got into Norfolk/Portsmouth area. We made the bend at Mile Marker "0" of the ICW and then there was a big noise and the boat stopped moving. Luckily we were right alongside Ocean Marine Yacht Center, a Yanmar repair facility. They had a face dock and we were...

Jun 4, 2010 - Portsmouth & Norfolk

Lots of familiar English names here so its weird to take a trip to Portsmouth and Norfolk. We hop on a ferry across the Elizabeth river to Norfolk waterfront and the naval museum. Waved at the passengers on the Royal Caribbean ship, Rapsody of the Seas who were departing for a cruise to Bermuda, the cruise terminal is right next to the museum. The museum is also home to the USS Wisconsin the last heavy cruiser built by the US navy. Amazing to stand next to the big guns trying to imagine the noise during firing.

Nov 29, 2009 - Underway Again

With the words of the famous Johnny Cash song "On the road again" ringing in our ears, we departed Oyster Bay in mid morning on Saturday. The delay was for a missbegotten trip over the bridge to the pharmacy to pick up some meds for Jean. Seems they decided that the days after Thanksgiving were a good time to stay closed thru the weekend. Speaking of which, our Turkey Day gathering was spectacular. Kim, David and the college boys arrived the night before and we moved off to the boat for a little settling in. Early Thanksgiving morning the...
