Hurrah! For the Red, White and Blue!! Yorktown Battlefield, VA. As you can see, Fort Monroe takes good care of its wildlife! The Yorktown Battlefield is remarkably well preserved for being earthwork defenses. A National Park Ranger takes you on a tour of the area pointing out the natural and manmade defenses and describing the battle as it took place in 1781 between the Colonists and the British. Jun 2, 2009 - Colonial Williamsburg, Day 2

This morning we entered through the working farm where a well-spoken slave explained the jobs and chores that were taken care of there. There were smallish plots of corn and tobacco growing, tools were being repaired, and laundry was being prepared. A stop at the armory showed more weapons on display and an old-timer explaining the history and use of the building. The streets were alive with all sorts of transportation, including an ox cart. May 29, 2009 - Getting A Toehold

We took the guided tour of the nearby reconstruction of Jamestown, the first successful English settlement on the American continent. Now, our idea of “roughing it” is black and white TV. I cannot imagine living as those men did that were the first to arrive. Only one man died on the ship as it crossed from England. But, by the time the ships returned with supplies, about 2/3 of the complement of settlers had died of fever, starvation, Indian raids, etc. These men were not here to settle the new land, they were here to find “riches” like...
