Sep 27, 2015 - The Cascades

Sunday morning, we had breakfast at the hotel with Chris, Mel, Heather, and Danny and then checked out. There was a plan to go to Cascades Falls on Sunday, but Casey and LeAnna were busy with family stuff, so Sandy and I headed there by ourselves. We headed west on US-460 to Pembroke and turned on Route 623 into Cascades Day Use Area. After paying the day-use fee, we began our hike. Normally, I would hike the lower trail to the falls and the upper trail back to make a loop. But we weren’t sure if Casey and any others would be arriving...

Jul 4, 2015 - the shed that sak built

we are out the door and headed for the barn. Can't get enough of the Baspitality but we have some plans to try to execute, Lord willing. Really didn't want to go, but at least Ba and Bill get 5 minutes of peace out of it in their resplendent home. Ba's mom Nancy made some unbelivably good crunchy outside buttery inside fried chicken. Black eyed peas. Corn bread, sweet, buttery, crunchy outside. Potato salad worthy of the...

Jan 26, 2014 - Frozen Cascades

Sunday, we headed up to Virginia to see the (hopefully) frozen Cascade Falls, located in the Cascades Days Use Area in Jefferson National Forest. It had been three years since I last visited here; the last two winters just weren’t cold enough to freeze a waterfall. But this year, we had gotten some unseasonably cold weather and conditions were good for the Cascades to freeze. We left the carpool location in Chapel Hill just after 730 and made our way up to Virginia. Casey, who had stayed with his parents in Blacksburg, was meeting us up...

Jul 21, 2011 - Dirty Dancing

We drove to the Mountain Lake Resort near Pembroke, VA. It's the location where the movie "Dirty Dancing" with Patrick Swayze was filmed in 1986. Apparently about a dozen scenes were filmed in the hotel and on the grounds before the company moved to North Carolina for more filming. The hotel offers "Dirty Dancing" weekends that include a guided tour of the property to see where the scenes were filmed (you can do a self-guided tour because they have signs at each location), karaoke, DD trivia, DD Dance lessons, and a Dirty Dancing Ball. We...
