Mar 20, 2016 - Natural Bridge

My next stop was Natural Bridge, Virginia. This has been a tourist spot for as long as there have been tourists. It's been listed as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. It was formed when the roof of a cavern collapsed hundreds of years ago. Legend says that George Washington visited here when he was a surveyor. The initials "G.W." carved on the bridge enhances the story but might just be a coincidence. I've visited Natural Bridge several times, but not since 1984. It hasn't changed. There's still a walking path down to the...

Sep 18, 2015 - Natural Bridge, Virginia

September 18 Today is my birthday and we got a relatively early start without a reservation at a campground. We had a campground in mind but we did not make a reservation. We wanted to travel a minimum of 200 miles because it is 500 miles to the campground where the Tiffin Rally is to be held and we wanted to get in more than 1/3rd of the distance today. We left Carrollton at 0830 bidding our friends goodbye and thanking them for their generosity and friendship over the past three days. We hope we will be able reciprocate at some time in...

2015 New York Trip

Jul 1, 2015 - Natural Bridge

After winding our way thru West Virginia we arrived at our KOA campground in Natural Bridge in Western Virginia. The big attraction in this area is the Natural Bridge which was once owned by Thomas Jefferson. It is approximately a one mile hike thru the park until you reach the falls. It has recently been purchased for $40M by the Virginia Park Service. The surrounding area seems to be in transition. There were many other attractions which were all closed. The Virginia Military Institute is a very impressive military college and is located...

Nov 28, 2014 - Devil's Marbleyard

Sandy had to be back at work on Saturday, so we left Pennsylvania Friday morning. Given holiday traffic, we decided to avoid I-95 and take I-81 south instead. It would add a little distance but potentially save a lot of hassle if I-95 was backed up. We stopped for breakfast at Dunkin Donuts before hitting the road. Although there was much snow in the ground still in Pennsylvania and northern Virginia, as we headed further south, it got lighter and lighter and soon was only visible high up on mountain peaks. Near Natural Bridge, we got off...

Nov 26, 2014 - Happy Thanksgiving

An early Thanksgiving wish from Sue, Ringo, and I. We were snowed in in Natural Bridge today when the Nor'easter dropped about 3" of heavy wet snow in the Shenandoah Valley. It's not that the roads were so bad, but there was a truck accident on I-81 about 10 miles north of Natural Bridge. It caused a 5 mile back-up in the north bound lanes and it didn't make any sense to leave here and sit in traffic for a couple of hours. I kept watch on the situation using the VaDot traffic cams and the back-up didn't seem to be getting any better by noon...

2014 Cross Country 2

Nov 25, 2014 - Penultimate Leg of Cross Country 2

Today was the next to last leg of Cross Country 2. We are spending the night at a KOA in Natural Bridge, VA. We're hoping that we don't get caught in the snow from the Nor'easter moving up the coast. We may be too far inland right now, but as we move closer to the coast on I-66, I think we may run into wet snow. Our goal is to get home by tomorrow night, but the road conditions will dictate how far we can go. I expect the traffic will be horrendous as once we get on I-95. I may have to look at an alternate, but going further north entails...

Sep 25, 2014 - Safari, So Good!

9/25/2014. Thursday. Safari So Good! This morning we went to the Virginia Safari Park just outside the front entrance to the KOA. We arrived at opening time, 9am, and we left the park at 12:15 pm. For you mathematicians out there, we spent the whole morning at Safari Park. Here's the deal: you drive up and purchase your tickets and a bucket of food for the animals and then you proceed driving on the marked roads at 5 mph, roll down your car windows when the various wildlife approach, you hold the feed bucket with both hands out of the...

Sep 23, 2014 - Get Me Over The Susquehanna, Navigator

9/23/2014 Tuesday. Get Me Over The Susquehanna, Navigator! The big discussion last night was how to get me over the Susquehanna River without unduly terror ing me with bridges and semis crowding on bridges. The Navigator earned her money when she plotted us on a southern route via hwy 72S connecting with U.S. Hwy 30w. Not only was this ascetic route but we bypassed Harrisburg and the busy I81 bridge over the killer river. 30W did cross The Susquehanna but the bridge was level more like a causeway and there was little traffic to contend...

Sep 11, 2014 - Shenandoah Valley

Today I did something that I had always wanted to do. That was to drive on the Skyline Drive. This road goes along the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains which form the Shenandoah Valley. Road starts at Front Royal, VA and comes out near Natural Bridge, VA.

Summer Trip 2014

Oct 14, 2013 - Natural Bridge, VA

We arrived at Natural Bridge KOA, VA early this afternoon and are now seeing the first sunlight since Saturday. It's Justice's first opportunity to be out of this RV since she left the ER as our previous stop was nonstop rain. This area is rather green compared to the fall colors we've been seeing! Justice's outside walk was a bit exhausting with her crutches as she'd gotten spoiled by the short distances in this RV. It was like starting all over again. When she got as far as the laundry room there was a retired Physical Therapist who told...

Aug 20, 2013 - Changes in Plans

You’ll notice I used the plural because we have had several plan changes since the last update. After I did the last entry we started looking at the availability of campgrounds in Connecticut and there weren’t any that were suitable to our schedule so we scratched CT and headed west towards NY Saturday morning. Around lunch time we were in the White Mountains of New Hampshire so we decided that since it was so early and such a beautiful day with such gorgeous scenery we’d just stop overnight there and spend the afternoon in the mountains....
