Middleburg is a small town about 50 miles west of downtown Washington D.C. It is one of those towns described as “quaint”. In Middleburg’s case, it is spelled with a capital “Q”. In addition, it is the town of the rich and famous that have their horse farms in the area including Robert Duvall, a famous actor; Elizabeth Taylor when she was married to Senator John Warner and lived on his horse farm; and the horse farm where Jacqueline Kennedy kept horses and rode them. We took a quick side trip to Middleberg, VA for lunch and ice cream. Middleburg is so named because it sat midway between Alexandria and Winchester, each a day's ride away on the Ashby Gap Road, now Route 50. Middleburg was a rest stop and was founded in 1787. The town prospered until the Civil War when Union and Confederate armies alternately occupied the area and carried off crops and horses.
