Oct 8, 2015 - My first hike on the" Appalachian Trail"

We were up early this morning to meet up with local hikers from the AT club, who planned a hike to McAfee Knob today. This is a scenic 13 km hike on part of the Appalachian Trail up to a scenic knoll at the top of the mountain, passing a couple of the hiker huts that are set up along the trail and part way along a gnarly wall of gigantic rocks, some wedged quite precariously on one another. At the top is a sweeping view of the mountains surrounding and the valleys below, lots of trees and some hay and pastureland. This group travels at a good...

Sep 8, 2006 - Roanoke

On the road again, as the song goes. We are headed for Roanoke, Virginia for a relaxing weekend with our friends. Our drive takes us through some beautiful surroundings which include the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Shenandoah Valley. It really is a beautiful sight. I can understand what a young girl we met on the Metro was saying when she said, "I'm so sick of trees. Everywhere you look, trees, trees, trees." How true this is. I will be heading north to warmer climes as soon as I can get it booked. The...

Aug 14, 2005 - In Virginia

The road-show that I have been calling my "life" this summer has moved back to my parent's house in Boones Mill, Virginia. I am spending the week here until my departure for Buenos Aires on Monday, August 22nd. Not too much planned while I am here. I've got to load up the backpack one more time. That won't be too hard since I still had most of my trip things together from my last attempt to conquer South America back in May. This coming weekend my brother, sister-in-law and nephew will be here. It has been several months since we were last...
