Oct 23, 2011 - Misty Mountain Camp Resort

Went to Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. He had a plantation with slaves. He is reported to have fathered several children with slave Sally Hemings after his wife had died. The only reason that Jefferson was able to have accomplished the many things he did was with the help of the slaves. Had lunch at Michie's Tavern. The building was from 1784. Pam's tooth was bothering her so got into see a dentist and she started some antibiotics.

Jul 16, 2011 - A day of rest

Today was a day of rest and relaxation before we move tomorrow for a visit to Washington, D.C. We bit the bullet and made a reservation for 4 nights in a park as close to Washington, D.C. as we can get. The park is located about 40 miles south of the city. The rate is going to be around $60 per night with tax. That’s an absurd rate! We move tomorrow and plan to spend one day each at the Museum of the Marines, Arlington Cemetery, and the Vietnam Memorial and the Smithsonian. It will be a whirlwind and then we turn south toward Virginia Beach.

Jul 15, 2011 - Frontier Culture Museum

This morning started with the usual routine of coffee and conversation. Our discussion lead to dirt track racing as usual so we looked for a race in the direction of our tentative travel plans. As luck would have it there’s a big race on July 23rd in the area where we plan to go. I looked on the track website and they had recommendations for camping locations. When I searched the first location listed and found the rates for the campground my jaw dropped to the floor -- $75 per night! We’re going to be moving toward the Virginia coast after...

Jul 14, 2011 - Max Meadows, VA to Greenwood, VA

We had a very pleasant, 155 mile drive through the hills and mountains. The weather has been perfect! It's not too hot or too cold, just right! When we pulled in to Misty Mountain Camp Resort I wasn't sure what to expect. I had read many reviews and the ratings were split between excellent and poor. Well, it's a nice place but the sites are very close together and the park is crowded. For the price, $40/night with Good Sam discount, I guess it's all about location, location, location. Tomorrow we will go in to Staunton to visit the Frontier...

Jul 4, 2011 - Happy Independence Day

We moved south to Misty Mountain Campground between Charlotteville and Staunton. The trip was only about 65 miles, but not without drama. Winnies's parking break burned up, so when it's time to park on any size hill, Sue has to jump out and chock the wheels. This happened once before on one of my trips south which I think was my fault. This time I think it's related to the electronic control that is part of the parking break set-up. I think we'll wait until we get home to get it fixed. Sue's doing a good job of chocking the wheel to prevent...

Jul 30, 2008 - Shenandoah Valley

We left Natural Bridge, VA on Tuesday and drove 67 miles to our campground on the south end of the Shenandoah Valley. Don't like this campground, but we will be here for a week seeing the sites in the area. Today, we drove about 65 miles of the Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah Valley National Park. It is a beautiful drive, but not near a pretty as Smokey Mtns. Still was worth the drive. During the drive, we hiked to a water falls. It was a very steep decent to the falls, and it was very hard getting back to the top. Thankfully, it was not...

Jul 6, 2008 - Greenwood, VA

We arrived Greenwood, VA on July 2nd. Greenwood is about 15 miles from Charlottesville where Ed will be building a store. We will be here for about 3 months. The campground is simply beautiful and as soon as I get some pictures I will update again. We are staying at the Misty Mountain Camping Resort. To say the least it was a very busy place this holiday weekend. They had a lot of activities planned for the guests. We had the best seat for the fireworks. All we had to do was watch out the RV window. We hope everyone had a safe and nice 4th.
