There is actually a place called The Great Dismal Swamp. Sounds pretty dismal doesn't it? It is actually a man made channel, part of the ICW from near Elizabeth City in North Carolina heading north into Virginia near Norfolk. gateway to Chesapeake Bay. The channel or "cut" has a sea Locke at each end. The water level is raised around 2.2 metres. The depth of water in the cut is 6ft which is exactly the same as the keel on Jennifer. SWITCH TO NORTH CAROLINA, SOUTH CAROLINA AND GEORGIA MAP Leaving Norfolk, Virginia boaters have a choice of two routes to the Abermarle Sound, the older, slower Dismal Swamp Canal route or the newer, faster Virginia Cut route. We had decided to take the slower, more scenic Dismal Swamp Canal route. Despite the name, it is anything but dismal. There are 2 locks along the canal, Deep Creek and South Mills locks and part way between them the North Carolina Welcome Centre with free docks where boaters may spend the night.
