Apr 29, 2017 - Front Royal, VA

Today’s drive was just as spectacular as yesterday’s and even slower because the speed limit was 35 mph all the way. We spotted another park visitor center, and this one also had a restaurant, so we decided to have the dinner we missed yesterday evening for lunch. Turned out to be an upscale sort of place and we had a really interesting dish of fried sweet potatoes topped with pulled pork. Not fare I’d want every day, but different and quite good. We made it to Front Royal, Virginia, in the afternoon and decided on a commercial campsite...

Apr 7, 2017 - Stormy Weather in Front Royal, Virginia

We spent yesterday and today sitting out bad weather. Rain and thunderstorms developed Wednesday night and continued all day yesterday. The wind picked up yesterday and the high winds continued off and on today. The skies are finally clearing up tonight and, by morning, the wind should calm down. We plan to head up Skyline Drive into Shenandoah National Park tomorrow. I made good use of our time here. I got caught up on filing and paid our April bills. We read several magazines and I scanned the articles we wanted to save onto my computer,...

Our 2017 Travels

Apr 5, 2017 - Front Royal RV Campground in Front Royal, Virginia

We finally found spring weather today when we got a little farther south in Pennsylvania. Most of today’s ride was through farm country. The fields are bright green. The trees are budding and the bushes have leafed out. I saw flowering forsythia, daffodils and some small trees – probably fruit trees. We are spending the next three nights at Front Royal RV Campground in Front Royal, Virginia. We planned to go to Shenandoah National Park, but the weather isn’t supposed to be very good. Thunderstorms are forecast for tonight and tomorrow and...

Our 2017 Travels

Sep 29, 2016 - RPI Skyline Ranch Resort

Our move today was a very wet one, there's a 3 day storm cycling over us. Dave's outside pack-up and hitch-up this morning was a wet time. His new Cabela's raincoat worked wonders keeping him dry. Our drive of 135 miles was mostly wet. When we landed at Skyline Ranch RV it was dry for just long enough for Dave to finish our abbreviated setup. Whew! All of the northeast needs rain, lots of it and so for that, we don't mind a little inconvenient wetness. We are here for 4 days, not sure what we'll do, but you'll be the first to be told! A...

Jul 20, 2016 - Skyline RV Resort, Front Royal, VA

It was a very easy 145 mile drive from Gettysburg Farm RV Resort due West on Hwy 30 straight to I-81 and head south to Front Royal. We crossed from PA into WV then into VA. Therefore, Myleah has been in VA, MD, PA, WV, D.C. on this trip with us, she is jazzed about all that she has done. Of course, this stop is her last before she heads back to her home in Sparks, Nevada. So, we have some neat things planned for her to see and do. Her dad, Kent is in the process of hiking the Pacific Crest Trail using his weekends or leave from work to do...

Jun 20, 2016 - I Arrive In Virginia!

After flying from San Francisco to Dulles IAP, Grandpa Dave and Grandma Becky picked me up from the airport and we stopped for food on the way to the RV park. After we got some things cleaned up outside, it started raining and I saw my first fireflies! The fireflies were very amazing and I walked around the pond outside of the RV. After a long day we went to bed and slept very well. NOTE: Tomorrow we move to Williamsburg Virginia.

Jun 17, 2016 - Front Royal, Virginia

Lake Gaston resort was one of those stops where it'd be easy to stay another week. But it was time to go and live upto a commitment we have. And that is, picking up our grand daughter for her turn with us for 5 weeks. Just as our long time readers will remember our grand sons Jordan and Kyle. Well, it is now Myleahs turn. The easy drive north on I-95 to US Hwy 17 taking us to I-66 and eventually to Front Royal was all the way breezy. It was a text book RV'ing drive, on the road at 9 a.m. off the road by 3 p.m. and 250 miles or less. If you...

Oct 12, 2014 - Shenandoah National Park & the Skyline Drive

8 am-it looks like today will finally be a sunny day…yeah! The swelling on Al’s knees has gone away and he will continue to take it easy. On our way to Front Royal, the entrance to Skyline Drive, VA, we came across the Dinosaur Land in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. Of course we had to stop and take some pictures. At Front Royal, VA, we stopped in at the visitor center to get oriented. They suggested a self-guided walking tour to the town. We started out on this tour but all the houses were closed so we headed north to the Gertrude E. Miller...

Oct 7, 2014 - Front Royal and Shenandoah Valley

A legendary version of the origin of the name Front Royal has it that, during colonial days, a giant oak tree - the "Royal" Tree of England - stood in the public square where Chester and Main Streets now join. It was there that the local militia, composed of raw recruits slow to learn military commands and maneuvers, were drilled. On one occasion, the sorely tried drill sergeant became so exasperated by the clumsy efforts of his troops and their failure to follow his command that he hit upon a phrase that all could understand and shouted,...

Lavender's Travels

Oct 1, 2014 - Matilda, Moliere and Mark

We had a lovely week in Fair Haven New Jersey with my dad and Geri. It was the start of my birthday week, or possibly my birthday month, and we got started with a fantastic splash. I think Tim Minchin is terrific as a performer, musician, comedian, commenter on the foibles of mankind etc. He wrote the music and lyrics for Matilda the musical, winner of 7 Olivier awards with a production in London and on Broadway. My wonderful dad bought tickets for the four of us to attend the Sunday matinee of this awesome show. I have read the book by...

Lavender's Travels

Jan 1, 2014 - Off at 6:30AM before the snow

After a quick start and a bit of snow in the Corning, NY area, we had clear driving all through Pennsylvania and the short hops through Maryland and West Virginia, we reached Virginia (410 miles later) and drove into Front Royal for our favorite Holiday Inn where the RV and car can stay attached in a large parking lot. Our vehicles were covered with salt spray, but the RV's windshield was easily cleaned at our gas stops. A nice dinner at the attached Houlihan's and a good night's sleep readied us for the next day's driving of 375 miles.
