Oct 14, 2015 - In High Places

It was a bit hard to pull ourselves away from the beautiful eastern shore at Chincoteague. After breakfast and coffee on the deck, enjoying the early morning view, we headed out toward Washington. DC. We drove out along Hwy 13 and into Maryland. Along the way we browsed through a couple of antique stores. The first one still in Virginia, was the flea market style, musty, dusty anything goes style with a not so friendly dog on duty. Thankfully he was chained as his bark was intimidating. The next shop just a little ways into Maryland, was...

Jan 31, 2012 - My first journal entry!

Hello friends and family! This is my first travel journal entry for my trip to Israel, yay! I hope that I will have the means and the presence of mind to write and update this daily - I hope it will be a good way for all y'all to follow my trip to see the Boy! For those of you who have followed Ari's amazing life from when he arrived in Kazakhstan, it will be particularly awesome! I am excited to go see him and to see the Holy Land up close and personal, and to remind the Boy that he never had it so good as when he was living at home where...

Oct 12, 2011 - Home

I am on the final leg of my flight home. My plan is to watch the more then 300 video clips from my trip and figure out which to use to make a movie. I insert my Flip into my computer and start deleting extraneous files. And then . . . . I accidentally delete the Big Trip folder. All 300+ videos. Gone. I’m more than a little upset. Oh sure, I’ll contact the Flip people when I get home. It’s an excruciating ballet of Web chat. We’ll spend a good half hour troubleshooting and then they’ll tell me that what I spent my last six week filming is...

Apr 5, 2010 - End of the Journey

We are all home now. So many great memories. Lots of people were taking notes. I hope they post here. Some of the topics that would be great to see: S. African slang we learned - things like "hold thumbs" instead of "cross fingers," and a loud talker instead of a megaphone Funny recurring themes - like are the safaris actually staged? ("release the zebras in section three...."); "Wouldn't it be nice if.....fill in your wishes here - sometimes they come true!" Impressions of the soccer stadiums - personally I preferred the Cape Town stadium...

Mar 31, 2010 - Another Safari Ride

The next day we went on the safari at 6:00AM!. We saw a lot of elephants. After the safari we went to eat breakfast. We went to the pool after we ate and swam for 30 minutes. After we got out we saw cute little monkey's in a tree fighting over a sandwich. We were all staring at the monkeys and were taking pictures. We turned around and there was a baboon eating stuff out of the trashcan! The baboon got a piece of old pizza and ran to the bushes. Zoe comes from the steps and the baboon comes out of the bushes. The baboon was 2 inches away...

Mar 27, 2010 - Greeting at the Airport

Today, we started our 24-hour journey to South Africa. We had to be at Dulles Airport more than four hours before the flight, which seemed like a long time to be at the airport. We were a little concerned whether the 29 boxes of soccer equipment and school supplies that we had collected would be accepted by South African airlines without a problem and whether we would raise any red flags with airport security when a u-haul truck drove up to the terminal and started unloading so many nondescript boxes. As it turns out, it all went smoothly....
