11 generations of the Hill Carter family have owned and inhabited the Shirley Plantation - they still live there! The main floor of the house is a museum while the family occupies the upper floors. Shirley continues as a working plantation (we drove through miles of cotton fields to get there) but also a private home, a National Historic Landmark. Part of the original plantation operates currently as a vineyard too!

Oct 23, 2007 - Visiting Berkeley Plantation

This morning I updated this journal...had gotten behind. After having lunch here in the coach, we took off for a 30 mile drive to Berkeley Plantation, on the James river. Stopped at Walgreen's on the way, to pick up prescriptions. I had visited there once before, about 1972, and at that time they had a grass runway that I landed my Navion airplane on. Berkeley is the site of multiple historic events. English settlers first landed there in 1619, before the Pilgrims in Massachusetts. They held a Thanksgiving service in thanks for their safe...
